My first firearm! - Savage Mark II

So I did my RPAL two, three years ago but only got around to getting a gun now ... a Savage Mark II in left hand.

I guess my first real shooting experience was at a range in Toronto shooting old Anschutz / CIL 190s with peep sights, but as it turns out, finding a left hand bolt action with nice peep sights is pretty much impossible.

I also wanted something with nice wood and thought about maybe a CZ or a Browning T-bolt, but a "free shipping" sale at Cabela's cut through the analysis paralysis and I wound up getting the Mark II and a Simmons 22 MAG scope.

I was pleasantly surprised that it comes with a trigger lock, and cable lock, and earplugs! And targets!

Plus the made in Canada thing is kinda neat.

I may yet still get a walnut 10/22 and get aperture sights for it, but one thing at a time.

My shooting buddy has one and gets very good accuracy with it, so good it prompted me to get one in 223... congrats

They work real good with better quality ammo.Average accuracy with bulk ammo though.I'm a lefty but I bought the regular MarkII BV so its ambi.I have no problems cycling the bolt with my right hand as are all my hunting rifles.Isn't there still a $25 USD rebate till the end of may as I got in on that.May want to spend a few more dollars on a better scope.I spent about the same on my scope as my rifle.Clean it and oil the bolt before you use it.Mine is working flawlessly ,shot about 200 rounds on the weekend and not one FTF or ejection issue.Went bang every time.I love mine and my 1022 sporter feels gross after using the Savage.May be investing in a MarkII TRRS before long.Crappy bulk ammo on left and Lapua Standard plus on right@50 yds

awesome and accurate guns, but the mags tend to be very cheaply made. Ive had 2 fail on me so far, but got them functional again by (lightly) hammering it.

Congrats on the first rifle~that one ought to serve you well! It can take some time to find the ammo any given rifle likes most, so don't stock-up too heavily on any one kind at first. (not that finding 22 ammo is easy these days...far from it) It matters more if you scope the gun, have it on a bench, and are looking for tight groups. Good exercise either way. My Savage 22s preferred subsonic~CCI Standard Velocity, Federal Gold Medal Target, etc. I'm using SK Standard now because I can't find those others.

^How true. I thought I "thinned the herd" by selling a centerfire last week...then yesterday, send an EMT off for a 22. lol I'll never learn. lol

Congrats on the first rifle~that one ought to serve you well! It can take some time to find the ammo any given rifle likes most, so don't stock-up too heavily on any one kind at first.

Thanks for the tip! I'll buy an assortment quality ammo and see what works best.

You made an excellent choice! I'm sure you will be very happy with it. I think you will find that it shoots CCI Standard Velocity very well. Enjoy!

Congrats on the purchace, I have a MK2 FV and I absolutly love it.

Very accurate and reliable, even with bulk ammo in my case. 100 meter w ith 5 shots in a toonie with Yellow Jacket and CCI Green Tag. Need some time off to go test more
