Sorry if this has been asked a million times before.

Looking for a shotgun for hunting deer with slugs, so 12ga. So I need something with rear sights, or ability to mount a scope. I would also like to play at the range with it, clay or skeet. Can't really afford a semi. At first I wanted a wingmaster, but now unsure?? Mossberg? Winchester?

Thanks!

Will

I'd go for the Wingmaster (not Express) ... standard 26", 28" or 30" vent-rib barrel with choke tubes.
Add a cantilever rifled slug barrel & your favourite low-powered scope - a 1x-4x or 1.5x-5x.
Load 'er up with Remington's Accu Tip Bonded Solids & have at 'er !

A Mossberg would be my distant second choice. They just feel odd to me.

Mossberg M500/M590/535 Combo. Comes with a rifle sighted barrel and a vent ribbed with Accu-set(changeable tubes) chokes. $469.95 at Frontier. And a camouflaged 535 with three barrels at $669.95. Lots of the daft aftermarket stuff available for M500s. Not as much or as easy to find as for 870's though.
A Maverick, also from Mossberg, is a less expensive M500. Barrels are interchangeable.
Even an 870 has to be drilled and tapped for a scope. Although there are no smithing mounts. Scopes are not really necessary unless you opt for a rifled barrel. Even then you can get by without a scope.
Frontier is listing an 870 Express(Stock wood, fit and finish is the only difference from a Wingmaster) combo with a 20" rifled barrel and a 26" vent rib barrel with Modified Rem Choke tube at $629.95 too.

Yes that's my first choice. But no rifles allowed and I assume that shotgun with rifled barrel is a no no.

Thanks that 535 is nice. Can't have a rifled barrel though. No rifles allowed where I want to go. Do either of those guns have rear sights? Or scope mount?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe rifled shotgun barrels count as full fledged rifles while hunting. And the cantilevered slug barrels have a rail for optics

I have both a rem 870 12g with smooth 28 inch and rifled barrel with sights .as well as a mossy 500 in 20g with a 26 inch barrel with tubes and a rifled barrel with sights this gun had holes drilled in the recever for a scope ,I love the 20g slugs for deer works very well ,,
so it is your choice as both work well .I do prefer the 20g for slugs and deer hunting .and the 12 for turkeys and water fowl ,
donot let anybody tell you that a 20g in no good for deer ,thy work very well for deer and bears with slugs ,,Dutch

is see you asked about the rifled barrels thy are still a shotgun and we use them for deer all over southern Ontario in the shotgun seasons ,so no worrys there ..and you can get both the 870 and the 500 with rifled sights ,,D

Thanks. I would like to know for sure. But regs say no rifles allowed?? Kinda a Gray area??? Maybe I need to talk with CO.

I like the Mossbergs due to value, and most seem to like them.

You should definitely talk to a CO and get things cleared up. I know some of the places that I have been that didn't allow the use of a rifled shotgun barrel didn't allow the use of slugs in any form.

Absolutely ... get a clarification of your local F&G regs. Here where I live in Ontario, a rifled slug barrel on a shotgun with sabot slugs is " a shotgun" ...
good to go for "Shotgun Season Only".

Were are you planning on hunting deer ..Here in Ontario a shotgun with a fully rifled barrel is still a shotgun ,we have been using then for deer for 30 plus years in southern Ontario ,We got some of the first rifled barrels from hastings to be brought into Canada way back ,Now everybody and there brother has a rifled barrel shotgun for deer and bear hunting ,I have a few buddys that hunt moose with them as well anything under 100 yards is stone dead from a 20g or 12g slug and some guns can easy do past 200 yards ,Savage 220 slug gun is one of them there 20g really shines at long range .Don't let anyone tell you that a 20g slug is to small for deer as I have a buddy that shot a cow moose at 60 yards with a 20g slug from a smooth bore Winchester pump model 12 shotgun ..stone dead right thru the ribs destroying both lungs ,,Dutch

1). I have done my slug hunting with a smoothbore 28" 12 gauge Winchester 1300 that shot as good as any rifles I owned. Just put the bead on the target and pull the trigger.
2). Dutchhunter is right in that a 20 gauge can be just as deadly, and is likely far less punishing in the recoil dept.
3). Semi autos are not expensive if bought used on the EE. Something like an older Winchester 1400 or even a used Rem 1100 can be bought under $400. A semi auto may reduce recoil as well.
4). The best budget slug gun I have heard of is the H&R single shot model. They always score very very well in tests and are usually available cheap, since they don't carry much prestige and do carry a lot of recoil.

If you want a all purpose shotgun that will kill all game in North America try a Remington 870 combo or personally I like the mossberg 500 or 535 3 barrel combo guns. price should be in the $550-600 range. They come with 28" barrel, 24" Turkey barrel and a 24" fully rifled slug barrel with cantilever to mount a scope on as well as 4 choke tubes. Not sure what you can not hunt or kill with it? Overall fit and finish is ok...not as nice as other mfg'ers but the 500 action has a proven track record for operational reliability. The 870 would also fit the bill... I'm am just not a fan of the "new" Remington. I have personally taken waterfowl, deer, Turkey and a few coyotes with mine.

Thank you. Thinking the Mossberg 535.

the wing master in a nicer gun but if it is not in the budget a 535 500 or a 870 will do the job just fine ,thy will not last as long as a model 12 or a wingmaster but thy will do the job ,I like the safety on the mossys better for hunting in cold weather with gloves ,,Dutch

I see you are from Victoria....Where do you plan to hunt? Most shotgun only zones in the area are buckshot only. Thats gonna require a different set up than slugs.
