M14 Trigger not resetting

Hello

I have a DA socom 18. I've put somewhere around 700 rounds through it (I really like it :cool: ). It has recently having a problem where the hammer does not #### after a shot. It is an intermittent problem: sometimes every 2nd shot, sometimes i'm good for 50+ rounds. At first i thought i was holding the trigger after shooting, but I've made myself aware of this and tried to release the trigger really fast. The problem seemed to cease for awhile, but then happened again. Is the hammer suppose to #### when the trigger is held? It currently does not.

I've searched, but i've only found several possibilities. Could it be a worn/defective bolt? trigger group? short stroking? Am I just shooting wrong? I have trouble thinking that it is me as the rifle worked great for a while, and I've never had this problem with any other semi. Though maybe i'm just getting too comfortable and relaxed.

I feel like a few people on here know every problem with the m14, so does anyone know how to fix this?
 
Your gas system may require a thorough clean. After about 500 rounds the interior of the gas piston and the gas plug need to be emptied of carbon deposits. Failure to do so can lead to the type of problem you are having. Best of luck.

Are you saying when you fire the rifle the round ejects but the hammer isn't cocked ? Does is chamber a round when this happens ?

Correct.

I will try a thorough cleaning of the gas system. For some reason I thought that the m14 gas system should not be taken apart, but that seems silly.
 
It sounds like you have a problem with the fit of your action to the stock. If the action is not seated into the stock deep enough the trigger reset doesn't engage consistently. It is a typical problem when you put a Norc into an M1A stock. It is mentioned in the stickies labeled "test after assembly" by Morpheus. One fix is to remove material from the right hand side (the side that is away from the bolt release) and having the action deeper into the stock. To answer your question in your first post, "yes" the hammer is supposed to #### when you have the trigger depressed after firing a round or cycling the action. Hope this helps.
