Yes i don,t think too rare at the moment. i find there is a pretty reliable cycle of them going through EE. They are certainly in demand though and get snapped up quickly. Maybe they will become rarer and rarer on the used market.
Depending how desperate you are they are making the 27 again but it has the internal lock. Just be patient I just got a 28 of EE they come around every so often.

I lucked into a Model 28 prohib, barrel 1 mm too short, possibly the second biggest prohib ever. It holds a 2" group at 25 meters offhand, and I'm not that good a shot. I LOVE THIS GUN. Worth it -- a longer barrel version (5" ...) would only be more accurate.
Really liking my 27-2 since changing out the oversized target stocks for something that sits in the hand better. Makes N-Frames feel a whole lot less clunky when they fit you.
My M-27 is a 6", and while I'd rather a 3.5" or a 5", I haven't bothered to look very hard. Brutus, that .38/44 Heavy Duty is very desireable in my books.

Boomer, someone else here on CGN has the wonderful Outdoorsman with the 6.5inch barrel and adjustable target sights. IIRC, it was very close to 1940 date of manufacture because I checked the serial number for him.
Yes, there is something so compelling about these big and beautiful handguns indeed.
