Hey guys~got my Bass Pro flyer in the mail, the Savage A17 is listed @ $429.99. Anybody considering one? Anybody have one yet?

OH BOY! The A17 is what I have been waiting for to get into the 17HMR game!

If anyone gets their hands on one, I want to know how you like it!

Cheers
Jay

Do some reading on rimfire central. Lots of not to thrilled people.

Just scanned through the first 5 pages of the Savage subforum over there...didn't see anything but second-hand descriptions of reviews. One guy mentioned that the trigger felt gritty, and could only be dialed-down to 5lbs. Also mentioned he'd heard that the magazine isn't up to 10/22 standards (probably a benchmark for rotary rimfire mags, admittedly) and that if not seated fully, may pop-out after the first shot. A $2,000+ rifle won't feed rounds properly if the mag isn't seated right, so I don't know if that's a real strike against it.

What did you read?

Being Savage, it's bound to be an economy rimfire...but I kind of want to like it. :) Granted, with the price of 17HMR ammo these days, it's making the .223 look that much better.

In the 17hmr area there are some reviews.

I've looked at a lot of reviews on the A17 and get some mixed messages. Most complain about the trigger being gritty and not being able to adjust the adjustable trigger at all. Then Jeff Guinn at Gunblast dot Com says he likes the trigger and dialed it down to 3 1/2 lbs. Reliability also has mixed messages as some are totally happy while others say the opposite. I hope Savage sorts it out as I'm interested in getting one and retiring my Marlin 17HMR.

A17 really caught my curiosity, but after release of the Bmag I'm waiting to hear some reviews first, they seem spotty so far

The fact they made new hotter ammo for it to cycle better and the fact that some lots of hmr still split cases I think I will pass

Off topic remark here - I keep hearing this, both online and in gun shops, but I've personally only ever split a handful of cases and they were only Winchester ammo, never anything else

Any more info on the Bmag you mentioned?

I'm with you on the split case issue. I've run at least 500 rounds through my Marlin 17HMR and have never split a case using both Winchester and Hornady ammo. My friend has a Taurus 17HMR revolver and he constantly has split cases no matter which ammo he uses so I don't think it's totally an ammo issue.

Like most new ideas it will probably take a couple of tries to get it right. What I would like to see is eventually is this rifle, or one like it in a AR like platform.

I've personally shot one at the range, buddy was frustrated with it, shooting 2-3" at 100 yards is pretty disappointing

and then lots of mixed reviews on various forums....I'd rather hold out to see how the rugers do

after the bmag issues, savage needs to nail the A17 on the first attempt...but I still like their bolt rimfires

Handled it at Shot Show and its very cheap feeling in every respect. Not a quality piece and not worth $400+.
Kick in a little extra and buy a CZ bolt gun and have something worth owning.
