Hi, I think this has been discussed before, but my search turned up empty here and on google(maybe my search skill really sucked).
so, please bear me.

Other than the underlug(which I don't care) difference between the two, are there any other differences really meaningful/practical for targetting shooting purpose?
what I can think of,
1. recoil. how much real difference would be between 4.2 and 5?
2. any mechanical difference? I know both are N frame which is strong.

some background. I mostly shoot 9/40/45 and only shot revolvers once, double action on 357mag(GP100) and single action 44mag(I think it was a 629, too excited at the time as it was a surprise loan and didn't pay attention to the barrel length). I have no problem with neither @ 7 yards and love both.

Thanks!

I think I'd prefer the opposite - a full lug 4.2 or a half lug 5.

Mine is 6" with no lug, and it points nicely. Weight on the barrel stabilizes things, at the expense of balance, so you ought to hold them and figure out what you like.

Hi Guys, thanks for the input on the underlug. However, it's not what I was asking and I do understand the different opinions/perspectives regardling this topic as it's all over the internet.
My question was:

Other than the underlug(which I don't care) difference between the two, , and technically, the slight difference on the sight radius, are there any other differences really meaningful/practical for targetting shooting purpose?
what I can think of,
1. recoil. how much real difference would be between 4.2 and 5?
2. any mechanical difference? I know both are N frame which is strong. how about things like trigger, spring mechanism etc.

thanks

The 4.2 has noticeably more recoil to me, but i won't go to the range and shoot hundred of rounds out of either so i still like the 4.2 for what it is.

No mechanical difference unless you by an early 5" Classic or Classic DX without the internal lock (still though, no real practical difference IMO).

Sight radius dosnt matter, it wont play a big enough part to justify a decision based on that. just get the one you like the most, I like the 5" best but the 4
2 looks better imo.

Of the two, the 4.2" is my pick because I prefer half-lug barrels. That said, my favourite configuration for N Frames is a half-lugged 5" barrel; it is just perfectly proportioned to my eye.

If both barrels were the same style I'd say that the difference in recoil would be so slight as to not really matter. However a 5" full underlug packs a lot more meat up front than a 4.2 half lug. So yeah, you'll notice the recoil difference. Especially the muzzle rise.

If you want to shoot full power loads then I'd go with the 5" for the extra meat up front to hold the kick back a little and the muzzle down by quite a lot. But if you load your own and would be willing to load up to what you enjoy for power than the half lug barrel really speaks to me. It may not to you.

Sight baseline length gives the nod to the 5". But hell, if you're only shooting at 7 to 15 yards again it won't matter a hoot. If you're aiming (sorry :d) at longer distances in time than go for the 5" for the slightly better baseline length.

decisions, decisions.... I hope I can run into the gent who lent me his 44mag again just to ask the dumb question what I shot last time which I did pretty well @7 yard considering it was the first time I shot a revolver, let alone 44mag. I mostly like will buy the same one. Lol... I do want to shoot 25 meters eventually as that's the lane in my club.
