So I bought a new 10/22 few months back and there is a deformation or fowling in the barrel. lead is being deposited in the top half in the barrel. So I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem? I'm hoping I don't have to send it away to have it fixed but I doubt that will happen. can someone give me some info on shipping guns I'm sure I'll need to do that soon
thanks and happy shooting

Yes I'm using the Remington target ammo I forgot to mention that I didn't finish writing my post and closed the page so when I did get around to posting it slipped my mind. Would a copper jacketed round be better just to make sure it is just the ammo

Buddy of mine had crazy lead build up in his new 10/22 barrel with that cheap bulk Remington .22 ammo.
run copper wash (jacket) or anything made by CCI and you'll be much happier.

The barrels are not always finished well and you can end up with little metal jags standing perpendicular to the surface of your bore. Those jags will peel off a little lead from each passing bullet which in time will turn into a big blob of lead in. Your barrel. Use a good solvent that will get the lead out then push a copper brush through the bore a few times then shoot some high velicity copper washed ammo like cci minimags. Clean after every 1-200 rounds of minimags and in a while thosejags will be laying down and no longer cause any issues

Ruger is making 10/22 as fast as they can so quality is not super. Fortunately you can fix the one you have with little effort.

Fwiw you actually have a barrel that needs to be broke in. This is exactly the primary reason folks break in barrels. Its to lay down the jags.

I put about a 100 rounds the first time. Cleaned it and then the next time it was around 250 and that's when I got the tumbling rounds. I actually broke my cheap cleaning rod trying to remove the lead

Thanks so much for the info guys. It's funny that barrel break in is the fix on this I chats with many people about if barrel break in was pointless but never a explanation why do you hear about it so much and now Ive got a story and a good reason to break in your barrels

Run a patch with JB's through a couple times, changing the patch each time, and then use a solvent to finish clean up. Try shooting it again and see if it solved the problem. Don't get carried away with the JB's. Rem ammo okay in a barrel after some wear, not the best for new barrel. Still a strong believer in breaking in new barrels.

Update:
So I picked up a box of federal auto-match and ran about 100 round through the gun and gave it a quick clean in the field. Didnt get much crud coming out of the gun so I shot the rest of the 350 rounds without fail or degradation of accuracy so I guess the Remington ammo was the problem, I'll shoot more of the federal or other stuff before I try the Remington again but for now I'm really happy my gun isn't pooched. Thanks for the advice everyone
cheers
