If Walter Mitty had only one 7.62x39 rifle , which one would it be?

the only 858 I've shot was when they first landed..... I didn't like it and it was no more accurate than my sks-d
hmmmmm
I've owned 2 mini 30's over the years and both were problematic and innacurate, I think I still have one in pieces in my gun room trunk LOL

Your problem may lie with the caliber, not the rifles. You obviously don't want a red rifle (as you just sh!t all over them), so your post here was for nothing. Go get an ACR or whatever black rifle you like. Woody VZ58's are awesome, but are limited to the accuracy of the round. Sounds like you like your SKS-D, you have your answer - doubt any other Red Rifle would appeal to you.

Other option is to wait untill ak47 becomes unprohib.

We've all been waiting for something that will most likely never happen. Wait until PM Mulclair comes in :runaway:

ya, maybe I should look into some of the latest upgrades and mods for the sks-d I already have. at 100 yards it's minute of pumpkin , so about 8" groups LOL but it is in pristine shape and I've got a 1/2 dozen mags for it.

I would be real pleased with something that shot close to 2 moa.
I didn't mean to crap on the 858's hehehe , I just didn't like it that's all
an xcr is something I thought about but the prices are kinda at the ceiling or above what I really wanna spend on a rifle that will be mostly for fun but could serve other purposes if required.
I didn't realize how few options we have for non restricted x39 semi's outside of the 858/sks rifles
thanx guys, i'll do some poking around

My new SKS from corwin arms(that looks unrefurbished and is in mint condition) shoots 2-3MOA consistently so its possible for sure from a SKS, just need to get the right one.

My one from wholesale sports on the other hand does 6-9MOA consistently, im lucky to hit a 8 inch gong at 100 yards 3/5 shots with it.

I've seen lots of fixed mag model sks rifles that shoot really well. I know a couple guys that hunt the smaller coastal deer here in BC with them and do very well.
detacheable mag is a must tho , from the factory, not an add on, so I'll have to see if I can wring some accuracy out of this sks-d I have here. I've shot it with a few different factory and surplus loads but no real improvements to note from one ammo over another, but it's bone stock as when it came from lever so many years ago.

if only the ar's were nonrestricted LOL it would open up some options eh?

Well if you are willing to mod it hical just made a really nice adaptor that will take the XCR mags so you can rock and roll with 10 rounds.

And yeah I intend to hunt deer with my accurate SKS, I would not hesitate to take one out to 200 yards with it.

not knocking the product , but no, not interested in that route. it's looking more and more like I'll have to look at the xcr or mod my sks-d LOL
I'm okay with those choices but am also gonna go see a buddy who is trying to convince me to look at a VZ he's got for sale (not on CGN)

Not sure of the status on these for Canada but my buddy down South loves his Sig;

I was a bit disappointed in the fit and finish on my new mini 30 , but not with design and function. Shoots every round from my crate of 1971 Tula Ammo but fails to feed a round in 30. Barnaul fmj was the same. No issue with the soft point MFS rounds.

Its my first 7.62*39 - chunky little gun and a soft shooter - it comes with 2 -5rd clips and a set of rings - no issues with heat and accuracy loss. I put a leopold 2*7 scope on it and even after a couple hours of cheap shooting it held decent groups off a bench at 100yards. Easy to break down and clean.

they are overpriced at 1100$ new - Ruger is banging them out at a great margin I bet - grinder marks and all

I've decided to just work with my sks-d that I've had for a couple decades
I'm pretty sure with my background and tools I can make some improvements
thx for the responses fellas

This is sounding like a great opportunity for a clinic, a guy like you with your many talents could transition from the m14 to the sks easily. Count me in, I'm looking for a new platform to bubba up.

oh no, my clinic days are over, though I am humbled and appreciate all the folks who have contacted me over the months since the last one, encouraging me to get back on that horse.....that and I ain't no sks tuning expert LOL I just shoot the darn things once in a while.
believe it or not, I have sold ALL my m14 building and clinic tools to a young fella with an itch to be a smith one day. He's 19 years old and just landed an apprenticeship to be a machinist. I'm gonna spend the next few years teaching him everything I know about the M14 platform.

Don't know who or what a Walter Mitty is but my vote is the sks or vz 58. Maybe an xcr if you want to spend more to do the same thing either of the other two choices can do. Knowing your aptitude for tinkering Thomas buy an sks and refit it to your specs with trigger and sight upgrades from hical.

Walter Mitty is a fictional character in James Thurber's short story "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", first published in The New Yorker on March 18, 1939, Mitty is a meek, mild man with a vivid fantasy life . Even in his heroic daydreams, Mitty does not triumph, several fantasies being interrupted before the final one sees Mitty dying bravely in front of a firing squad

some years ago on the firing line forum , I think it was gus fisher that started a threaded on his walter mitty rifle..... it was an m14
so my thread was kind of in that same spirit.
the rifle we would be talking about would be the one that walter mitty could rely on to save him throughout his many fantasies LOL

The VZ 52/57 is a pleasure to shoot and a decent one will be able to wring as much accuracy out of the milsurp ammo you'll run through it. Down side is prices have crept up and availability is scarce.
Non-restricted with detachable 5/10 round mags with excellent build quality in a very cool design.
Worthy of being in every semi-auto aficionado's inventory ;)
