Pet loads for 308 and Varget

The most accurate Varget charges for 308 are maximum charge weight shown on Hodgdon website. Using Lapua brass had primer pocket expansion after 3 reloads. Tried Lapua Palma brass with small rifle primer pockets. With identical powder charge velocity was very close in standard 308 Lapua and Palma brass. Some of this Lapua Palma brass has been fired 12 times. Bullets are seated to place "bullet shank" bottom in line with shoulder/neck junction.

20 thou off the lands works for me and still fits the mag

I have a long magazine so I have the flexibility to seat the bullet long. I've just started to reload for my 308 and currently I have the bullet 0.010" into the lands. I have already tried various distances off the lands but haven't tried just touching.

was using 44gr with 155 bergers with great success out of a 22" HB, even took it out to 1000. Chrony was giving me a steady 2750fps, re tuned to BLC2 and Nosler E tips in 155 once I couldn't find varget anymore

45gr Varget in Fed brass, CCI200 primers and Speer 150gr Boat Tail, Nosler 150gr Ballistic Tip or Hornady 150gr SPBT all seated for 2.8" OAL, all extremely accurate in my 20" HB Howa.

just done up a few of the 168gr Aussie projies, I also use 44gr of AR2208/Varget for these an find poi is a little lower than my 150gr load but fine for stalking under 200.

I guess velocitys are similarish

i have 44 of of varget, fed brass, cci 200 primer, and barnes tsx 165 gr, providing i do my part, i sit sub moa at 100, mines set for hunting, just gotta find a spot to physically take it past 100, current range is 100 max, unsure of velocity, need to grab a chrono soon

I use 43 gr of Varget behind 130 gr 6.5mm. (6.5x47)

But where are you guys getting this mythical "Varget"? Higgy's has been out of stock for months and are not forthcoming when I ask for an ETA. Cabela's had some, but they wanted me to buy them a new truck to transport it with ($180 for shipping 4 lbs).

I just loaded up some 165 gamekings with 44,45 and 46 grains of varget so see how they perform, rifle is a model seven. I have had good luck with varget and the 7mm-08 so I am expecting decent results with the 308.

I haven't had an issue finding it, I still have 8 or 9 pounds kicking around I think. Anytime I am anywhere, I buy one or two, nothing crazy, not gonna go buy a case because the world is ending, but I think 8 lbs over my current needs is enough. 242, 7-08 and .308 all accept it well. So 8lbs doesn't go that far, but gives me time to find more.

Good on ya. Been looking since before Christmas. I was abroad at the time, but I'm told there was a local guy who got a notification from the web that some Varget and primers were in stock at SFRC, and he cleaned out the store. It takes a very special type of person to buy up 10 000 benchrest primers for personal inventory.

You may find that there is significant lot-to-lot variation in Varget - it is better to buy one large keg than a bunch of one pounders from different lots.

i seem to have made an error with my post off 44 grains of varget, after todays outing, i apparently need to pull and do another ladder test.lol, couldnt group less the 2 inches if i tried today, ahwell, good thing i like doing this haha

Yes I believe that. I took two and blended... I will see how consistency is. I doubt any change, but I was curious. I was told by a fella who helped me get into reloading that he often did blend lot number as long as they were bought in a relative frame of time from each other. I gave it a try, so far I can't tell any difference.

42.3 gr varget with a 175 gr smk are run in two of my target 308s. One with Lapua brass and the other Hornady. 2620 fps with a 24" (both have ). Both rem 700s / vls heavily modified and the other is an m40 retro sniper clone.

Has printed a 3.975 " 3 shot group at 1040 yards. With he modified target rifle
