so i took apart my winchester model 12.
then i put it back together.

the operation didnt go as smoothly as i had hoped.

when i close the action, then remove my hand from the foregrip, and pull the trigger (firing it on a snapcap), the action will not pull straight back to open, it needs moved forward just a ####hair then it can come back. if i close the action and keep my hand on the foregrip with a tiny bit of forward pressure as i fire (snapcap), it will then come straight back no problem.

what i cant remember is; was it always like this? or did i damage something trying to wrestle the bolt in and out?

Thats how they work!! Recoil from the shot unlocks it so you can pump the next round. They also slam fire meaning you can hold the trigger down while pumping and the gun will fire when the action closes. There is no safety interruptor to prevent the gun from being fired while pumped with the trigger depressed. Just an FYI

Yup! That's the way it works AND that's the fun part! A good Model 12 shooter can shoot as fast as a semi-auto. I've tried but never got that good ... takes the right "mindset" not to "pull the trigger" for each shot! On a NASTY NOTE - a 20 ga Model 12 had a NASTY quirk/malfunction - pull the trigger - nothing happen - "touch the forearm " to rack the slide (finger off trigger) - gun would fire!!!! Re-enforced the need for good muzzle control AT ALL TIMES!
 
When firing a live round you won't notice the slight forward movement needed to cycle the action as recoil will do this for you. One of those things that always freak new M12 owners out...along with shell in the mag protruding out of the mag above the carrier.
