So I have had this sitting in the safe a while now, and decided to sell a few extra mosins I didn't need. But before I sold the extras, I wanted to see what the most accurate of the group was and keep that one. I always knew this was a ex sniper from the serial number on the side of the barrel, but I never looked into it further.

So I take it out and start cleaning it, and while cleaning the barrel, I noticed the old scope mount holes were a bit different than what I had seen online before.

I went over to 7.62X54 net to look it up, and I still can't find exactly what I have. I think it might be a PEM? If anyone could chime in and let me know what you think I would appreciate it.
This is on a 1942 Izzy.

it's really hard to tell what I'm looking at because the images are too large and too far zoomed in.

However, if it is drilled and tapped on the left side of the receiver just behind the barrel with 2 holes and then has 2 holes further back and is dated 1938-1942 you probably have yourself an ex-sniper of the PE simplified or "PEM" variety with the later side mount.

It does look like a former PEM sniper rifle with the later side mount.

The receiver will look like this when drilled and tapped:

From what I've read ,the Ishies mounts were pinned as well as D+T but the Tula's were not.I have a 42 Tula ........very rare.......Harold

Thanks for the help. Are these rarer? I don't need this rifle and have not shot it yet so I plan on selling. Time to google it haha

Yes, they are more rare than your typical 91/30. Niche market though, for sure. The only people looking for one are probably serious collectors and those looking to a do a restoration. However, an original side mount and scope are quite rare and can cost as much as $2000 or more.

If it has a nice bore you can try and sell it for $350 and go from there.

It will be hard to find a comparable - as they are that rare - but the rifle is a factory refurb and the mount holes filled in.

End of the day = Ex PEM versus Ex PU sniper - but still an ex-sniper.

Honestly - Ex Snipers go for $200-300 - Maybe for a PEM to the right collector add $50

Vassilli used a PEM 42 Tula like mine, a few thousand that year made before the PU scope replaced it...........Harold
