Pre 64 winchesters

Depends what you mean by "best". Arguably current production (model 70's) are the best finished quality ever (I did say arguably ). However we hardcore Winchester devotee's love or Pre-64's. The 1970's into the 80's was a hazey memory (for me at least!), but once Winchester returned with the claw extractor things slowly got better...until 2005 when they closed. The current Winchesters made since 2008 are great and I've owned several. Again, just my opinion.

Winchester, like Savage, were cutting costs in the mid 1960's.

There's lots of info on the net about what exactly they did, such as cheap finish, machine impressed checkering, stamped metal parts etc etc.

Avoid Winchester 94's made between 1964 - mid 1970's, after that, they got better.

I prefer the pre 1952 Winchester '94's with the "long wood" ahead of the for end, they look more "classic".

I like pre '64's better than post '64's.

US army thought so and only converted pre 64 M70's ( 30-06 ) to Vietmam era sniper rifles from what I have read. This would have added to the lure of pre 64 at that time and onward.

With the Win. 94, the average hunter won't notice the difference between Post and Pre.IMO
My two Post 64s deliver bolt action like accuracy, while my sole Pre 64 can only achieve lever action like accuracy.;)
And welcome to CGN
