How Often Do You Clean Your Black Rifle?

I have looked and have not found very much useful information online about the frequency in which you should clean your firearms. A friend of mine recently gave me a tongue lashing about how infrequently I clean my black rifle. I was under the impression that if you're shooting non-corrosive ammo that over cleaning is just as bad, if not worse, as under cleaning. And that over cleaning can really decrease accuracy and is more or less unnecessary, and is only advised by the military because a malfunctioning rifle can be life or death.

If some people on here could just give me an opinion of how often you should clean your black rifle, and maybe some personal stories about cleaning issues I would very much appreciate it.

Thanks!!

I clean after I shoot, I don't use corrosive ammo though, I'll do it like a week later and won't clean it again till the next time I shoot. Mind you I usually go through 500 - 600 rounds per trip

I suffered from Army induced overcleaning too, but I beat it!!!

As such, my competition AR gets pulled through once a month, and probably sees 1000 rounds in that time. I run it quite wet, and I wipe the BCG down before competition day to get the gunge off. It gets a detailed strip and clean once every six months.

I can't even remember the last time it FTF/FTE...

I clean after every shooting session. I have a DI AR so it can get dirty after a few hundred rounds.
I hate seeing the carbon buildup around the bolt! I scrub with a combination of G96 and Hoppes #9.
There are guys here who never clean and have no problems. I'm just a little OCD!
One thing for sure! Run the ARs wet!! Well lubed always works!

During the break-in-process I cleaned after every 1 shot (first 10), then every 3 shots (next 15), and finally even 5 shots (next 15). Since then I havent really cleaned other than basic wipe and re-lube (Fireclean). FWIW I run a piston driven AR (SIG716) which inherently doesn't get dirty as much.

honestly if its non corrosive ammo you could not clean it till it stops functionning.
But in 10 seconds the clean nannies will tell you that you MUST clean your firearm immediately after use... (sigh)

I normally give mine a quick wipe after a few hundred rounds, sometimes a couple times out before I clean it. No issues at all.

Normally don't lube it a ton either. *shrug

I clean after every session. Wipeout in the barrel. I shoot piston guns so bolt and receiver is just wiped down with patches and MPRO7. The piston is scrubbed with the same. Doesn't take long to clean at all.

I do a simple wipe down and re-lube every time, full cleaning every 500 rounds, once a year on christmas holidays is "inspection time" where everything gets a detail strip, thorough clean and parts replaced if required.

Corrosive ammo is an immediate cleaning though.

I have different levels of cleaning.

After a trip to the range, I generally run a boresnake through it and then put it back in the safe. If things are looking a little dry, I'll apply some lube.

I'll do a basic cleaning every month or two, consisting of wiping down the bolt/bcg and using a proper brush on the bore, and lubing as needed.

Once or twice a year, I'll do a full strip down and clean everything.

. . . when I feel like it ?

With my AR's usually later after a range day. Typically 100 rounds every time to I go the range.
If I don't feel like it, I don't fuss.

Not to worry about over cleaning. The action bits aren't hurt by a wipedown and relube. I don't scrape the heck out of them to get all the carbon off the back of the bolt like some.

For the barrels, well, my AR's aren't really precision shooters, so I don't worry about overcleaning damage. I bet I do more damage shooting them.
I've been using nylon brushes these days. I can't see the harm some patches of Mpro and a nylon brush are going to do that 20 rounds as fast I can pull the trigger aren't.
