I've been shooting for a long time and was thinking of moving into the AR style guns. What do you guys think would be a good starter set up and where to buy. My budget is around $1200 and I'm looking for new. Also should I get a 5.56 or .223. Thanks.

Stag arms is a good deal with life time warranty. Check out arms east great people to deal with. I have the 3TM Left handed model 1:7 twist in 556 great rifle. You won't be disapointed . Get the 556 that way you can shoot 223 as well.

Just bought my first AR, a Windham. Found a great deal on a quality AR for $750.
Has a lifetime warranty and U.S. made, hard to beat.

+1 for Windham Weaponry. These are made in Maine by the same people that used to make Bushmasters before the Freedom Group bought them up, laid the staff off, and moved their manufacturing out of Windham, Maine. Those workers bought up the plant and started making their own ARs. Excellent quality for the price.

You see the best advice I can give you is to do your own research. Simply because here, basing on the answers provided, you will be more confused than informed. People will recommend you whatever they own and those recommendations are usually base on emotions and not a common sense. Prepare your own list of your priorities and be ready to compromise on some of them. Best of luck to you.

Core15 or Windham. Good stuff for the money.

Recently I started a thread looking for a starter AR for my wife, lots recommended the Norinco. After reading the varied responses (good and bad) and checking them out I say don't go the cheap route. And you know what?.... the Norinco is not that much cheaper. No where near cheaper to make it worth the compromises.

Been looking at the Windham, will I be able to upgrade it down the road, by adding different parts, when I get accustomed to the AR platform. Are all AR parts universal?
