Hey I'm building a custom rifle with a McMillan stock painted in their Sand Camo print. Im trying to figure out (not being able to see the colours in advance) what one of the dozens of tans/coyote colours to pick from cerakote. Iv kind of just been looking at a picture of the stock and looking at the pictures of the swatches and seeing what looks the best. I haven't seen many examples, so it be awesome if somebody has done one, and could show a pic and tell me what colour they used.

The pic is an example of the stock and the colour they cerakoted the barrel and action is Flat Dark Earth (which is too dark for me). Im looking for a sandy colour to match the sand in the stock. I think iv narrowed it down to Light Sand or Federal Standard Sabre Sand.. But iv seen different pics of the stock and depending on the lighting, if its a factory picture the FS Sabre Sand matches better but if its a picture someone has taken on their own the Light Sand looks better..

any examples of builds with cerakote Tans would be much appreciated

This is a really good example i found. I think the bolt is Nut Brown or Muddy River but i don't know what shade of Tan/Sand the barrel is... I would try to get it a little better of a match, a bit more yellow..

the stock colours look much lighter than the factory example pictures. its tough not seeing it in person first..

Your best bet is to just wait if you you want it to match how you want. If you contact NIC in the states (creator of ceracoat) They will send you out samples squares of thin metal coated in there product. Pick the 4 or 5 colors you think you like and wait for the stock to arrive. Yes it will suck having to wait a bit more before it's done but its the only real way to be 100% happy. Remember the majority of guys looking at this thread will be seeing different shades due to monitor settings and type differences. Just my .02

Its just the rifle builders were going to do the cerakote with everything all at once. I don't have the equipment/knowhow to properly apply cerakote myself and don't know of any gunsmiths in the GTA area who do it... Plus since their bedding it and everything Id rather have it done right and not take it apart after to paint it.

They can't bed it till they have the stock and it doesn't take long to do the coating. So get the samples now send them to the rifle builder and when the stock shows up tell them to pick the one that matches closest to the stock colour you want. It will add maybe 4-5 days to the build. If you really want to just know the colour your way better off asking this on the snipers hide website as you have hundreds of guys there that have ceracoate and tactical camo stocks as compared to the few dozen here. Someone there will likely be able to give you a close to 100% match.

ya really close. Il have to look them up... Do they cerakote scopes and bipods?

Btw does anyone have any experience cerakoting the bolt body? Iv seen many many pictures where people do it.. But the rifle builders won't do it for me, and i couldn't really get a straight answer why..
I wasn't expecting the bolt head or face but just the body to give it some more colour other than just plain black..

I think it would most definitely depend on what type of action you are using. If you're building on a factory action like a savage or Remington I would say go for it with the cerakote on the bolt. Cerakoting the bolt will add a few thousandths to the diameter. Factory actions are built with enough tolerance to accommodate this. Most customs actions are built with much tighter tolerances. I have a Defiance Rebel action that is built very tight. The extra dimension of the cerakote would cause it to bind and likely wouldn't be anywhere near as smooth as an uncoated bolt.

Thats funny.. Thats exactly what the builder said! and since I'm running their custom action (an ATRS Maverick) I didn't coat the bolt body. Thats fine with me as long as I'm getting a kick ass action. At least the rest of it is all getting coloured.

Btw what did the Defiance Rebel run you? That was my other option but i didn't want the current 12 month wait for it, given I already have to wait 10 for the McMillan Stock. Iv heard the Maverick is about the same.. but I'm not sure on cost.. The Maverick was 1800. So really it was the wait that pushed my hand. I would have gotten whatever custom one I didn't have to wait a year for. Time will tell how it all turns out, can't wait though!
