Howdy. So I am still new to reloading and did a bunch up for my son. He is shooting 38 and 40 cal. He is telling me that he is getting 3-4 ftfs per box. The rounds will fire second time around but he says that it is light primer strikes. Another person reloaded some with another reloader and he had this issue as well. Is this common with reloads? It cannot be the guns because he has two 40's and the 38/357 and he is having this happen.

Make sure all the primer pockets are clean, and new primers are seated below flush of the case head. Sounds like the first attempt is fully seating the primer, the second hit it popping the primer.

If the primer is not seated fully ( slightly below flush) it will move forward when the firing pin hits it. This cushions the impact.

Even tho he has different guns they could still be the problem. A lot of pistols now-a days are spring modified (or factory set up for this as well) to work easier for lots of competitions. Some primers manufactured are too stiff in the cup for these guns to fire consistently. Try a box of Federal primers, fairly well though of as requiring the lightest hammer strike to work consistently

Failures to fire are rarely caused by bad primers. Can be by too light of a hammer/striker fall caused by an improper trigger job. Not likely in multiple pistols. Most common cause is no powder.
Got any pictures of the allegedly light strikes?
