Riding a moose...?

Gabriel Acquin (sometimes spelled Atwin) was a famous Native New Brunswick guide and a sort of legend in his own time. He (and I have seen the photos in the Provincial Archives her) took a pair of moose to the Chicago World's fair as an exhibit. These moose were trained to haul loads in harness. So I know that such things are certainly not outside that realm of possibility. I heard the stories from one of his grandsons, the late Gabe Dedham an elder of the St. Mary's First Nations community. A pal and I looked up the photos to confirm this. Wish I one to attach but this was before the digital era.

Glad to have company, was feeling a bit out in the cold. Way I see it, if you're on the Tuchodi lakes (looks like Tuchodi anyhow), and a bunch of chubby drunks are chasing a Moose at length in a jet boat then jumping on it, would you cheer them on or call them in when back in service? Yes, a lot of activities are tough on wildlife, this isn't about what's tough it's about respect in my eyes.

You got that RIGHT!

Get over it. Riding a moose is stupid... not torture ffs. Guess the moose needs counselling for post traumatic stress. It's not like he hit it with a stick, No harm no foul. Waste of my tax dollars investigating this crap. Save a moose....eat a vegetarian!

What they're doing is foolish, no doubt, and they're even more foolish for filming it and posting it on youtube, but on the other hand I wouldn't place it in the "despicable" category. There are actually those among us that hunt moose with pointy sticks and that's seen as quite alright.

I have killed many moose. Can't believe that so many believe that riding a moose is more traumatic for the moose then killing it. Had one bull moose come under my tree stand within a foot while bow hunting for bears once. Never had the guts to jump on it's back, but I thought about it. But that's just me.

Boyz will be boyz.

Well now, let's see......the arguably most civilized race on the planet, don their red coats and black boots and helmets, climb up on a cross country trained horse, assemble their pack of dogs and then go out and run down foxes all day. Which the dogs tear to pieces when they have run it into the ground and it can no longer run. This is classed as "high sport" there.
The Spaniards of old California used to ride out and fence (sword fight) with the local grizzlies until the bear would pop a blood vessel in their brain and keel over, or if they got bored would blind it and just ride off.....great fun, all things considered.
And how about the "ORIGINAL" silhouette shooters...........again the Spaniards, who would commission the local natives to catch them javelina, Rio Grande turkeys, and desert rams, (I don't recall what kind of game bird they shot at 200 mtrs) stake them out at the appropriate distances and then take turns shooting at them offhand, while some serious betting and drinking went on.......Then we have #### fighting, bull fighting, dog fighting...........all considered great fun by those involved, but a tad hard on the critters involved......

Now I don't know anything about the photos of Teddy and the moose logger, but I know for a fact that at least 2 gentlemen in the Yukon during the gold rush tamed and rode moose around Dawson City. The "REAL" photos are in the museum..........or at least they were 30 years ago (long before photoshop), and I have heard of two more gentlemen in Alaska around the same time having "a good moose under them ". I believe there are photos in North Pole and in Fairbanks, again long before photoshop.

And how about Jimmy Anderson who chased stone sheep and caribou with his super cub into nets and then landed, tackled and hog tied them, threw them in the cub, flew them down the mountain and sold them to Al Oemings game farm...........

And then there are the problem grizzlies and blackies that are darted and transported else where...........so what you say..........how about the fact they don't tell you, mortality rate exceeds 50%.

So as I said a little moose hitchhiking is way down on the list of sports harmful to game animals, and given the size of them and their ability to fight back and the water temps they are to be found in, I doubt it will reach epidemic proportions and become a serious threat to the mental health of the moose population, in general.

Any kid that grew up on the family farm/homestead of old, has ridden every type farm animal.
Pigs were by far the hardest of any other animal to stay on. Any big pig running loose in the farm yard would send its young, enthusiastic rider to the ground in a very few short seconds.

I always found this to be accurate as well, I have been told I was fos, but I said, try and jump on a 250lb plus boar and see how you do!!!

Ps ... I was told after only a couple years of recovery therapy 3x a week, that pig returned completely to normal and you could hardly even tell it had experienced the trauma of a young guy trying to hang on for the 3-5 seconds.
It lived a full and happy life until it was turned to bacon.

Well, you're about right on the time, maybe a little optimistic. There was no way to measure time except guess, but three seconds was probably close to average!

These guys are just community losers. Too many of them around wherever you go these days.

Well, just watch the vid....no harm done...pretty funny!! I honestly can't believe how up tight some people are on here....maybe they never heard of a little thing called rodeo!!!

Well said.

... and all of those activities, except for bull fighting, are highly illegal now. I don't care that the Spaniards roped grizzly bears for amusement 200 years ago. We should know better by now. I can't believe the number of people on this forum that have no problem with this.

While I don't agree with their actions I have a hard time demonizing them and certainly can't bring myself to wish them harm as many people seem eager to do. They made a foolish choice as I am sure just about every single person has made at some point in their life. They were extra foolish for making it public consumption by posting it online, yes they should face the consequences but the resources some are suggesting they place into catching them could be much better allocated catching child abusers and true criminals.

I can also see their point of view of it being a funny and seemingly stereotypical Canadian right of passage. I also suspect that it caused no more trauma than surviving a winter and evading predators.

With a mortality rate of about 50% as far as i have heard for young moose through the winter, thats not a all that good thing to think...
