So, I've been running a Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8 for the last few years on my rifle, and while it has performed well, I want something new. I was looking at the Vortex Razor HD Gen II 3-18x50 as it has all the features I want, being a FFP reticule, Miliradian adjustments, Zero Stop and I like the EBR-2C (MRAD) reticule. From what I've seen, the optical clarity and over all performance of the scope is very good.

What is holding me back is the extremely high weight (almost 3 lb!). I've looked around, and have also been contemplating a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 or Kahles K312II 3-12x50, as they appear to also have the features I'm looking for. Unfortunately I don't have any first hand experience with the new Kahles scopes (have a few 20+ year old ones) or Nightforce scopes. I've owned one of the Gen 1 Razor HD scopes and was very happy with its performance, so that's why I was leaning towards the Vortex at first.

So, what are you guys using, and what do you suggest? Anything else I should look at? Budget isn't a big deal as I'll be cleaning out a few guns I'm not using.

I ran a March 3-24x42mm FFP. Has the features you are looking for, but is extremely light and compact. Here is a pic of it with a March 1-10x24mm and a Vortex PST 1-4x24mm.

In 1-8x24mm FFP, the March or the new Minox would be my choices. Would have got one of those if they had been available at the time. Never used the above scope over 10x for anything but deliberates...

The Mk4 MRT 2.5-8 is the original SPR optic issued with the 5.56 MK12 first came out about 10 years ago. It is designed to be light weight and in general get quick shots out to 600m with MK262, but light transmission and the lens quality are not as good as NF and the newer Leupold MK6 line IMHO. It is a design at least 10 years old.

If you want to upgrade along the same line as the MK4, the NF 2.5-10 is essentially a more expensive and higher quality MK4, without BDC.

IMHO, high magnification scopes are not good for SR ( at least for newbies ) because they need more consistent positioning. This is a challenge in the position of kneeling. Parallax error is pretty severe at high mag. and it leaves less margin of error. Lower fixed power optical gun sights like ACOG and Elcan are more tolerant, even if you cheat a bit and do not get the perfect eye-eye piece position.

This was my second choice if I couldn't find the 4-16x44. Small and light. It will be a good choice.

Yes, that was definitely one of the determining factors. I liked the idea of the Razor HD 3-18x50, but when I thought about it more, I'd never use it on anything more than 10x (at least for SR), and it's about twice the weight of the Viper. I was also tempted to stick with the Leupold, but being SFP and having MOA adjustments/MIL reticule, it just wasn't what I wanted to stick with.

So, the scope showed up today, and it's gorgeous, everything I was expecting. I'll post pics once I get it mounted (and my rifle clean from the match at Connaught this past weekend...).

Cool. Do you shoot out to 500 yards in your Service matches? I have one coming up with 2 courses of fire at 500 and that's when the extra power comes in handy.
