Shorten PAL Approval Times

So I finally got hold of someone at the Manitoba CFO office, that was willing to dig deeper and give me more than just "it's with the CFO for review" line I've been getting the last several calls.
Apparently I was subject to a weapon prohibition back in 2003. I thought it was longer than that ago, but who am I to argue.
Anyway, she told me the CFO is suppose to request a copy of the police report regarding that incident, but she says sometimes they forget. Understandable, with the amount of apicatuons they probably have for review. She said she would send a reminder off to the CFO and to check back in 3 weeks (seems to be a popular call back time frame they give people)
So I'm back to waiting, but at least I know what the holdup is. The last few douches I talked to couldn't even give me that.

I guess this can serve as a heads up for some of you that have also been waiting a very long time (just over 4 months for me), it doesn't seem to matter if your prohibition was longer than 5 years ago, they seem to care whether you've had one at all.
In my case, no weapon was involved, nor did I assault anyone (in my opinion anyway), it was just a shoving match out of self defence, that led to me being arrested, and a 5 year prohibition put in place. I think the CFP need to modify their applications and add this clause in there, even though it is ridiculous. This whole process just stinks.

there has got to be more going on.. I had a 10yr prohibition for everything from a firearm to steak knife.. couldn't even have a bat in my car unless it was in the trunk and I was going to a ball game.. my 10yrs was up 2 weeks before I took the safety coarse.. .. they only need a copy of the report if your prohibition was within the last 5 years if its longer as you stated yours was from 2003 you didn't even need to mention it..

I'm confused, are we talking about the provincial CFO or the federal CFP/RCMP? I've called the CFP number many times and have gotten through the reference stage, they are now waiting another 2 weeks apparently to scan my photo. But I'm not sure if I need to call the Ontario CFO, please advise.

first your app goes to CFO Miramichi which is federal then it is sent to your provincial CFO for final review before you get rubber stamped.. I called the 1-800 number and asked to be transferred to the BC CFO in your case the Ontario CFO they are the ones who have final say

Who conducts the reference interview? RCMP or Provincial CFO? Thanks.

I believe the provincial CFO does the interviews if needed. . sometimes they look at your record , age etc and can rubber stamp it without the interviews.. sometimes files get pulled for automatic reviews without bias.. thats just based on what ive read here and online

i didn't mention anything. It came up as part of the background check I suppose. The lady I talked to today is the one that mentioned it to me, as the reason for the delay. Maybe these things are CFO specific, I have no idea. But one thing is for sure, It's getting harder and harder to keep my cool with them when I call. This is crazy it takes so long.

Maybe the CFO does a one on one interview with the applicant, but not the reference, at least not in my case. After the first 2 months went by not hearing anything about my app, and no reference being called, I called CFP to see what's up with it. They told me they needed to speak to just one reference, and to get him to call in with the reference number. She informed me an interview with me was not needed. Once that reference called in, I called back the next day and they told me it was now with the CFO for final approval.

Thanks, I clarified the same with the CFP today. Apparently they still haven't scanned my photo in, and it only goes to the Ontario CFO after that. :(

I sometimes wonder what kind of processes they have and why it takes them over 2 months to scan in a photo and form, run a background check, have a 3 minute phone call with a reference and mail/email to CFO.
Maybe there's a legitimate reason, I don't think such a large organisation would stay understaffed year after year if they have enough workload, or not buy modern technology to process admin work. From what I've heard, even Canada Post has machines to automatically scan and send mail forward, from our handwritten envelopes.
Does anyone here actually work with CFP that can chime in and help us understand?

28 Days was over 2 weeks ago, been calling since then and it is still not ready for references. From Grenee83's timeline I can assume that it takes 3-4 weeks AFTER the waiting period for your app to be ready for references. That's assuming you're in Ontario. BC seems to have the worst times but that's due to their CFO.

Probably a tactical 870...

and here she is...

To keep people in the loop I sent my RPAL application in on April 1st 2015, called them once at about day 29...never called again..they never called me or my references...and I received my RPAL last week so 80 or so days....

Took the test first weekend of June, just got my stamped test. Is the fax number posted somewhere? I sent in my app last week.

I haven't received my stamped results yet, but would guess you should call them first. I invision they'll give you a reference number to attach to the fax to ensure it ends up in your file. Much like they do for references when they call in.

My application was received by the RCMP on May 1 and today it was approved, June 25. I'm thankful I got approved in less than 2 months. Called in a few times and was never given a straight answer, was told 45 days, was told 3-6 months, etc. Most average I have seen is 2-3 months on average.

Amol and I had roughly the same time period, ironically live near each other and took the courses the same weekend but in different cities. We kept updating each other as the process went and both got issued the same day!

The lady told me to watch my credit card account. She told me to have my reference call in, three weeks after my account was charged (June 3rd). He did (June 24th) and they said they could not speak to him, as he didn't have a number to supply. I called, two days later (June 26th) and was told to call back in a "few" weeks (four equals July 24th), then they will give me my application number (which I can already see, online!?!). Then my reference can call in, with said number.

Hi all, I'm new here and am in progress of getting my PAL/RPAL here's the progress so far:

May 21 - Mailed my application
May 25 - application received
June 11 - appeared online
June 12 - Amex charged

One of my references asked me does the interviewers call come from a Number that shows as Unknown or Blocked or does it say RCMP/CFO? She has her phone set to block unknown calls since 99% are telemarketers. She just wanted to know if she should turn off the call blocking or not?

So I wanted to do a follow up on my post from back on June 16.

June 19 - My first Reference was contacted and interview completed
June 19/29 - Second reference received letter today from RCMP dated June 19 (she gave me the wrong cell# for her) asking her to call them.
June 29 - go online and see message "Your application has been processed and your licence has been issued. If you have not received your licence within 2 weeks please contact the Canadian Firearms Program Toll Free number. (1-800 731-4000)"

So total time 35 days or 25 weekdays/10 weekend days, which I think for Ontario is pretty good. I never even got called or called them so I can't provide any additional suggestions for improving PAL/RPAL times.
