Sierra 80gr SMK's vs Berger 80 gr VLDs

Its not that I prefer them, but I am zinging 80 gr SMK under Re15 to 700yds without issue - jammed 10 thou - most days they group 3/4 - 1 MOA at that distance if the wind isn't an issue. Found that load and haven't tried anything else!

Berger has the better BC, but not by a huge amount, G1 .445 versus .420 And being a VLD, you could have some fun finding the seating depth sweet spot.

If you can, try them both. Unfortunately, nowadays a lot of my bullet choice comes down to availability. One bullet might shoot solid gold groups, but that's not much good if you can't find any.

I've fired thousands of 80gr VLDs, 82gr BTHP, and 90gr VLDs.
I've fired about 3/4 a box of 80gr SMKs.

You can guess my preference. :)

Yes thats my problem as well...I can't locally pick up any 80 gr SMK's but can find the 80 gr VLD's...I think I might give them a try.

On my third barrel shooting 223 in f class, 300 500 y 80.5 Bergers, beyond 500 only use 90 gr Bergers You can not run against the .308 win shooting 80 grs bullets. at 700,800 & 900 m yes maybe with no wind conditions, but that seldom ever happens.
I wouldn't be using 80 gr VLDs there very finicky to get to shoot and I think Berger will drop production SOON

Can you shoot 90 grs with a 1 in 8 or do you need a faster twist?

I get a big giggle when I see my article referred to on Sniperhide as some "insane" guy shooting a 223 to a mile.

Good thing I never wrote an article on my exploits to get a 6.5 140gr VLD out to a GPS ranged 2340yds. That would just be plain silly :)

Shoot rocks... plenty of them. Ground is very sandy with little to no grass. Easy to spot misses and hits.

I just hike in with my GPS and range targets.

I am sure you have seen my other pics of the clear cutting around me.... LR shooting is simply a function of how far you want to shoot.

Easy.

I have also shot the 80.5 bergers to a mile. With a 28" kreiger Mystic built for me. It's certainly not impossible and really turns heads when you do it. I don't compete so I don't have those concerns just make sure you have good glass, hits on steel are HARD to see, you just recover copper flowers under the target. ;)
