For those that have upgraded their savages and what not with the Boyds SS evolution you've probably found these things have great ergonomics, but are hardly designed for shooting with a bipod, the front end, though fitting well in the palm is short and canted upwards, making mounting a bipod on it kind of strange, the angle on the palm swell makes a bipod mounted there angle the legs forward, and because it doesn't protrude at forwards it means the bipod as a pivot point shifts the point of aim much quicker then a bipod mounted further up. This might be good for shooting gophers randomly at close range though.

Anyway, short story long, I had an idea in my head and hadn't seen anything produced so I thought id try making something for the second part of my Lakefield project, I ran my Boyds over the router an glued in some Tee rail from Lee Valley, and started the rough shape of what I'm planning on using to move the bipod forward. First picture of the progress below

The shape isn't quite how I want it yet but I can fasten it on to the stock, I'll be shaping it up and adding some aluminum to the front to mount the light weight bipod later, just some food for though as there isn't much out there like this.

i just installed a swivel stud on the front about 2.5" back from the leading edge. it has worked well enough for bench shooting so far off a bipod. for using a bipod i find that it works as well as can be expected. if i want to go more accurate i use a front adjustable rest.

Yep me too

I suppose that would work well, but the problem is it's just not over complicated enough for the tinkerer

Or you do this... which we have been doing for over a decade... takes five minutes and costs ten bucks...

Ok, your right, I'll keep this project to myself if there's no interest.

Don't keep anything to yourself... just putting out the options... many may not have the tinkering skills or inclination to take on a bigger project... so a simple solution may work better for those... proceed...

i think the reason why so many people havent bothered to do anything like that is because unless you have a 8" barrel the evo stock tends to do front heavy in the first place. if you start bolting stuff to the front it will be worse. the barrel on mine is 16" and i put tungsten weights in the rear to balance it a bit better. adds a bit of weight but the feel is much nicer when im plinking. the extra weight is also nice for BR.

Pretty much done, I'll probably Krylon the aluminum matte black, the wholeextension with bipod feels fairly light, I'd say less then two pounds, the battery on the scale was dead so I couldn't check it. I changed the shape a bit and added some tiger wood for a lower grip section, believe it or not, it seems to track well holding it from the tiger wood fore end while standing.

Moving the bipod this far forward really did steady the aim up alot compared to other rifles I've shot with the bipod so much closer to the trigger, it just seems to steady it enough for a bit of a quicker shot from what I've tried so far.

your lawn is looking good!

Haha, it was sunny that day and we had a couple days of rain so it greened up pretty good, but there's lots of broad leaf weed, need to get it sprayed but I'll get it done in the fall after anything edible has been harvested. hard getting pictures to show the carbon fiber on the barrel but it seems taking pictures of a rifle on the grass on a sunny day gets the best color to show in pictures, a light background makes a rifle seem darker, and natural light seems to show color contrast better and not show too many shadows.

I painted the bipod mount black and sanded the top section under the barrel straight, I should post another picture when I take it out to shoot it on friday.

I'm really not sure why more folks don't try moving bipods forward as far as possible more often.

Agreed. I'd rather see what you come up with personally. Who knows, it may provide inspiration for another project.

If it's easy and it works, people often take that route first. As one who usually tries the hard way first, I fully understand. Tinkerers unite! I think you should start a thread in the general section dedicated to crazy projects. Who knows what it will inspire?

I was starting to think there was no one else on here with that kind of mind set. Nice to meet you weasel1.

I've tried posting other things on here before and that hasn't had much for positive feedback, for instance I had bolt handles waterjet out of 6061 aluminum for my savage but that thread was shut down for some reason:

I've done a few other "crazy projects", dropping my B mag in the AICS airsoft stock, carbon fiber barrel shrouds, waterjet custom lever loops etc., I'm working on a P-14 barreled action into an ATS mauser-scout stock right now which would fit the bill. But for the most part there isn't a lot of response, either people don't care or relate or have no interest, or just not much to offer.

I'm happy to post more pictures or info if someone starts a thread related to that, but I'll probably wait till I see a thread like that get rolling first.
