Brumby Calibre?

Any flat shooting mid caliber from 6.5 to .35 cal should be just fine... from my arsenal, I would probably choose a .308 loaded with 165 BTSP's....
 
I would take my T3 Hunter in .308 and I have lots of 165 grainers to go around

I ate Horsemeat once (not knowing what it was) and it was great. Wouldn't have any trouble pulling the trigger.

A cull is a cull, no matter what the species.
 
As for horse meat... Allistair Overeem's training regime for mixed martial arts called for 7 meals a day of horse meat... he has some of the top nutrionalists and trainers in the world in his camp... must be something to that.
 
I grew up on horses, competed internationally, my brother still does. I can think back to a couple of my or my friends mounts that I would like to have shot.
As for the ferals on the eastern slopes something absolutely needs to be done.
As for the original post is it a head shot only proposition like kangaroos? Or any ethical shot?
If the first I'm thinking 22-250 or 243, heck maybe even 223?
If the latter I'm thinking 308 or better as some beasties can be as big or bigger than moose.

It seems a bit like the Eastern slopes, There is Wild Horse throughout the NP here, they damage the "alpine moss/grass" up very high altitude in the summers, an in the winters they drop elevation into the Valleys and devastate the lower country.

in places where I hunt Sambar deer, it is not uncommon to have a 3ft wide, 1ft deep "foot path" from the Southern end to the North and branching off inbetween.. ive never seen Sambar deer create this problem Unless it is right down on the Farm land, where high numbers are running in an out of a crop on the flat, but even then nothing on this scale.

I've found little Deer numbers where there is a High Horse count. some places have little horse an not many more deer but that's the places I hunt.


As a Rule of thumb where the horses mostly Roam is NP, where we cannot Hunt deer and Seldom get shot, when they run down a bit into the Deer country I believe Spotlighters do take aim and as I mention in some places it is not uncommon to find a couple that had been shot. (by Parks or Stalkers I do not know 100%)

We also need to do a little bit more about it in the Lower altitudes aslong as Parks do their bit for up on Top (highly precious regions)



The question pops up as a while ago I had the Scope on one, but I felt unsure as I don't mind seeing Brumbies in the bush, but on the Flip side was how many there was an the damage the Species does... I was a bit unsure of how the beast may react, so I took photos and let them be.

I run into them close quarters mostly, 75m max and almost most times they are aware you are there

Depends if you want to shoot a brumby, some of the brumbies, or all of the brumbies. If its either of the first two, use whatever you've got. If its the last one, then a 30-06 or .308 with a bunch of 10 shot mags is about as good as anything. Its easier to arrange that state with a .308 with bolt guns. A solution ideally suited for Australia would be a Remington 7600 with the mags we can't have anymore chambered in 35 Whelen.
 
At 75 metres average distance where you are running into them WhelanLad its too bad a semi is not allowed. Heck a 7.62x39 with a soft point bullet and a small compact gun like an SKS would be plenty.

Very interesting thread. Never knew we had Feral Horse problems here in Canada. Given what some are saying about competing with our native species and damaging habitat I would not have an issue participating in a cull. In fact bring it on! LOL
 
I grew up just south of Calgary near Millarville and as kids at certain times of the year we had to keep the horses close to the barn as the wild herd was close by and they tended to steal horses if they could. We had one old white horse that had been taken from the wild herd back in the 40's or even late 30's and lived till it was over 37 years old. Used to see wild horses out by Blue Rock up until the late 80's but haven't been back there for a while.

Seen some around the Little Elbow campground a couple of years ago. When I was a kid, my dad and a friend went Grizzly hunting west of Turner Valley, on his motor cycle. They shot a Wildie for bait. No bear showed up though. Couple of New Immigrants. :rolleyes:

As I recall he got pretty good results with a .17 shooting copper swaged solids too.

But now that we have the internets, those don't and won't work, eh? :)

Take what gun works, and take more ammo than you think you need, and have at.

I shot a couple Horses, in New Zealand Kaimanawa mountains, twenty four years ago, only time I had ever thought the 270 win, was too small, was after stalking in on a big stallion, in the bush. I think, if I was on a cull, I would look at 30-06 up, perhaps a 300mag of sum sort, of the rifle choices I have, it would be 300 H&H or 9.3x62, the 300H&H is a single shot, so the nod would go to the 9.3
