Instead of a Python?

I've been licensed for just over a year now and have been building up a bit of a collection. My interests seen to be more in older revolvers and some (more historical) pistols ....(a 1911 and a couple of BHP's so far). I'm thinking about my next acquisition and am a little conflicted. I'm tempted by the thought of a Python but wonder if a decent, rebarreled to restricted, PO8 Luger might not be a better choice. I'm guessing I could get the Luger and a nice P38, or maybe Luger and a Browning 1922 for Python money. WWYD?... Thoughts?

Maybe we can make it a game......Say you had 2,000-2500 for a handgun (or handguns) purchase.....what would you choose? Lets say restricted only...no 12(6) stuff.

I'd like a GC shooter Luger myself. I just don't have the cash when they come up.

For Python money I'd buy the new Colt National Match (retro) series 70

With the leftovers... Well, the Luger, or a 29-2 and possibly a shotgun of some sort

If classic revolvers are your thing try to score a Colt 3-5-7. Same action as a Python and far fewer made (Apx 15,000).
The Colt officers models are also a great choice.

I am discovering how fantastic those super Redhawk are...
When i bought my SRH 44 Mag 4.2 inch i was so impress, i did not hesitated when a SRH Alaskan Toklat 454 Casull 5 inch was available, i snatched as fast as i could, now i will buy a SRH 480 Ruger, i would not give away my S&W but those SRH are as good, a Redhawk 45LC/ 45 ACP 4.2 inch will join the herd when available... JP.

I was planning on making this exact same suggestion. And if you have one of the two Pet Loads volumes by Ken Waters, he discovered that this one was the most accurate 357 magnum revolver that he personally tested. This same launcher was also the most accurate sixgun amongst several, with his 38 target wadcutters.

Skeeter Skelton also packed this same revolver with the longer six inch barrel.

My own Colt 3-5-7, I mostly keep as my designated 50 yard handgun with 38 Special. My one and only K frame S&W is sighted for 25 yards using the exact same ammo.

If you want a classic revolver then you need to look really hard at an early S&W model 27 or better yet a pre model 27.

The model 27 is the reason Colt built the python.

Well it depends on what your interests are specifically and if your looking to have common ammo only or if your willing to have some odd ball rounds.

If I had 2500$ for handguns at the moment, I would likely go with the Rebarreled P08 (WWI dated as I am collecting WWI guns at the moment) a Webley in .455 (again WWI dated or earlier), and a 1898 Rast Gasser or early Nagant revolver. This would possibly leave some money left over as well.

If I was going for practical shooting (i.e. common calibers) it would be a .357 or .38 of some sort (I have a King Cobra, which I only shoot .38 spl in anyways, absolute blast to play with). If you bought a King Cobra (around the 1500$ area from what I understand) that would still leave a grand for something else (like say a Rebarreled Luger or a nice P38). That would meet your somewhat modern and milsurp desire.

Best bang for your buck would be a python. They shoot like a dream and 10 years from now it will be worth more than what you will have paid now.

I would find an older SIG 210, P7M8/13 or HK P9S, preferably the Sport model.

x2. great options there.

A luger would be very interesting for sure. You might find an artillery model in your range so at least it will keep its collector appeal.

If you want something to get out and shoot, you really can't beat the sig p210. The ergos and smoothness of these guns are second to none. You have to experience it to believe it. You should be able to find a 210-2 military model in excellent condition for 2K-2300. A new (and possibly discontinued) german legend p210 would fetch around $2600, but clearly you are more of a 'classics' guy and would probably like the older swiss models.

The older HK P7s and P9s are phenomenal too in accuracy and craftsmanship and they also have very unique actions.

For a classic revolver, i'm liking the colt 3-5-7 as well, or some of the older unique Smiths like the 38/44 or pre-27s.
