Hey Folks

I'm in the market for my first 1911. Here are some of my prefences to help narrow down the options (only big dealbreakers are price and caliber)

-full size steel frame
- in .45
- in or around $1000
-series 70 design
-internal extractor
-nothing tactical, no rails etc
-open to different finishes

Reliability is important. I want the most bang for my buck. The less tinkering I have to do the better. Not looking to use in competition; I've got a CZ for that. Just for going pow at the range and impressing the ladies ;)

My research has pointed me towards the Ruger, STI Spartan, R1. Please share your thoughts and opinions!

Thanks

I can only talk about the Spartan. I have had two in 45 and currently have one in 9mm. Should never have sold the first 45. Very accurate, great trigger and sights. Only sold the second one to move to cheaper ammo. You won't be disappointed.

I had a Smith and Wesson E series that was a real great shooter. Should have never sold it !!

Look at the S.A.M line up (same company as Spartin) offered at Wolverine:) I bought one and am very impressed for the money.

Although the SAM & Spartan are both made in the Philippines they are not the same company and I would say the Spartan gets a little more loving care in finishing from STI in the U.S.

Maybe so but They have to be connected somewhere as the Thunderbolt and the Spartan are the exact same FA from everything I can see here. And if there is a way that STI in the US can somehow improve on the fit and finish that's pretty good as the SAM units I have seen lately including my SS thunderbolt version, have an incredible mil spec fit and finish. Again for the money, it's a winner in my world.

If you want new I second the SAM/Seraphim lines from Wolverine and Seraphim Armory respectively. They are a solidly built Series 70 pistol. Depending on model they'll come in well under $1k, allowing money for mods or ammo.

I picked up a SAM Thunderbolt, and I was impressed with the fit, finish and trigger.

If you want to impress the ladies, get a Norinco (what the heck do they know about guns anyways), and spend the other 700 bucks wining and dining them.:)

Ruger SR 1911 and Remington R1 and STI Spartan is within the budget you specified. Remington R1 and STI Spartan seems to be built with a little tighter slide to frame fit. Some Ruger SR 1911 owners had comments of a loose slide to frame fit. SAM pistols are also well built with just a slight question of material quality. Armscor/Rock Island Armory should also fit within your budget. Armscor/RIA builds parts for STI Spartan. There are some used Canadian-built PARA ORD worth exploring.

I would choose kimber, some models should worth to have a look.I still keep a 1991 canada original p16-40 limited Para ord so accurate don't want to sell.
But recently I buy norinco 1911a1x new model,I like it so much that I buy another one 2week later .I call it poorman night hawk.

Haha...well played! I should start telling them my buckmark is a WW2 luger while i'm at it lol. Just skip the 1911 all together.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm interested in the SAMs too but none of the shops in the GTA ever have them. I've never had a chance to get my mits on them. I'd like to inspect the fit and finish. Can anyone comment on the finish of the spartans? whenever I see them on the EE they seem to have a lot of wear.

The gun is smooth and well built the final coating is the only thing I'd like to see improved, but the days of the deep blue Smith's are now gone.
