Hi guys I am looking at buying a spotting scope for shooting and some scouting for hunting. I am in Manitoba so it won't be extreme like in the mountains. But I would like to see a 22 bullet hole at 300+ yards.
I was looking at a Kowa 662 - straight body with a TE 9Z 20-60x zoom eyepiece?
It about $1000 66mm obj. The scope is discontinued now??
It would be another 4-500 for the HD glass version.
Anyone have this spotter?

I did not really want to spend that much at this time.

Kowa makes the best spotting scopes on the market. If you only want to buy one during your lifetime then buy the Kowa. If not, then buy a cheaper one.

22 holes at 300 yards may be a tall order, but you sure as hell won't see them through a Bushnell.

Many will argue with "the best" but for sure Kowa has been making spotting scopes for shooters longer than most companies...in fact I can only think of two others (Unertl and B&L) that may have been making them longer ...and both of those companies aren't the players that they used to be. Kowa know a lot about what shooters need and they build a terrific product. Zeiss, Leica, Nikon etc etc can make a great optical product as well....but for most of us a Kowa (in our price range) will never really need upgrading. So.. for a shooter... I agree with "BUM"!

A .22 cal hole at 300 is probably unrealistic. I'm sure that there are some here that say they do it all the time. I was recently at a match in Wyoming and i compared my 80mm Bushnell HD scope to a new big Kowa. The Kowa was superior, but not by a big margin. The more serious you are though, the more important small differences become. In heavy mirage it was still tricky to see all of my 40 cal holes at 300 yards through either scope.

Regardless, buy the best you can afford, with the largest objective lens. You don't generally need a lot of power. I often keep mine at 20x.

With good, early light, no mirage and a still day (morning) it would be possible...maybe. You see lots of BPCR guys shooting (or rather spotting) with Kowas. Usually there are two kinds of shooters/spotters at a BPCR match...the guys with Kowa spotters and the guys who'll offer to buy yours if they find out you're quitting the sport!

I am using a Pentax PF 80-ED with 20-60 zoom Pentax eye piece. 22 holes at 300 are visible on white paper 90%+ of the time. In the black is harder but I can usually make them out.

I think the conditions would haveto be perfect, which is pretty rare in most places. BPCR/BPTR is mostly what I shoot. I don't feel at all handicapped with my scope, although I bought it before getting into competitive shooting. If I were starting over I'd buy a Kowa, but not a small one. You only live once :)

I have a Vortex Razor HD zoom eye piece 20-60x85 very happy with it. I compared it side by side with a Pentax 80ED with zoom eye piece they were identical with a slight edge to the Vortex. The Pentax was brighter with the prime eye piece but not by much.
