223,varget and 55gn vmax

Is your tikka 1-8" as well? You should be using heavier bullets than 55gr as far as I know. Somewhere around the 65-75 gr range for that twist rate

I don't understand all the interest in using stick powder in the .223 when there are so many ball powders that do the job with out all the metering hassle.

More consistent velocities due to burn rate with extruded, shoots the same in winter and summer, better powder for long range accuracy.
For hunting under 200m with the .223, ball is usually what I use as I can bulk load much quicker. Target loads get extruded.

Accuracy and temperature stability.

Some things are more important to some than ease of metering. Depends on what you need your load to do.

i chose varget for its' temperature stability.could shoot at +30 to -30.depends on the day here in new brunswick.lol

i use a digital scale for each load i produce, powder dropper is only good to get me close, then i use a trickler to drop 1 grain at a time.

I'm using 25.8gr Varget under a 55gr SPBT, very close to the V-Max. I'm shooting out of a 10.5" AR set up for CQB but the groupings are impressive. I started with Varget in my 5.56 loads and have not found any reason to change. Metering can be a little crunchy at times but measured charge consistency is excellent with my venerable RCBS powder drop. Varget was very hard to find for a while so if anyone can recommend alternatives they have positive experience with, that would be good.

I have tried 25g to 26g of Varget under 55g Frontier fmj's. I am getting 1.5moa out of these loads using an 18" JP with a scope at 100M.
I believe the projectiles are to blame, they are inconsistent in weight and shape, good plinking bullets.

I have found Varget to meter well on my Xl 650 but, I do occasionally get powder bridging and when it does it's a mess!

I have obtained a load of BL-C 2 and will use that next.
