Seen one, now I can't get my mind off it. Gonna have a hard time choking down the cost, but it is consuming me.
Is it worth what they ask?
Don't matter, I want one.. Never had an interest in a revolver until I seen this thing..
Any guys here have one?

That's a pretty big itch dude lol, I wish you good luck scratching it and I'm jealous. Handle a nice blued S&W 586 or a stainless 686 before you pull the trigger on the Python though, you might be satisfied with them and save yourself a butt load of money. The Python is a work of art though.

It's a sellers market. Are they worth it? Up to you however I would wait until the elections are over this fall before dropping the amount of coin they command. As mentioned, a 586 is a better gun.

Thanks.. Is the 586 similar? I just can stop thinking about it..

Edit.. Just Googled the suggestions.. And it's a SW, perfect.. I need a revolver soon.
Elections? Don't get it.. What does that have to do with what I already own?

I have conducted many "show and tells" at my gun safe with good friends who are not shooters. Despite owning revolvers made by almost every manufacturer, these guys always grab my Python first, ooing and ahhing about how beautiful or cool it looks! Colt hit a home run with this revolver. Universally appealing good looks, fantastic double action and accurate to boot! If you get the bug, prepare to pay cause they ain't making 'em anymore! As far as those who suggest a S&W 586 as being better, quite simply...they are wrong!

...you might be satisfied with them ...

Not possible...a (insert gun of your desire here) itch can only be satisfied by a (insert gun of your desire here) scratch.

Once scratched however, you might be satisfied with a (insert other gun here), but not before.

Get one, then you can decide for yourself if it was worth it. I have one and love it. I also have a number of fantastic Smiths, which I also appreciate. All great, all with different attributes.

No they are not wrong, but if you say they are not as pretty then you would be correct. The people who own the guns are not objective about them. Whatever a person owns they think that is the best.

The people you want to talk to are the people who fix them, they are the ones who know what quality is.

Just my experiences in this matter.

So true

Personally. I think my S and W 586 with its blued and wood config. is better looking than a python. That is my taste.

Yes me too. And I think the N frame with no lug is about as close to perfection as a DA revolver can get. That said, an 8" blued python has always called out to me, so maybe one day.

King Cobras are exceptionally beautiful, for half the price. Still expensive though. And not a Python.... But close.

Actually not too close. They should be half the price of pythons but are typically much closer these days. and I'm not saying they are not decent guns

Python prices have gone crazy in the last year or so...you used to see them at $2000 or so but now they're asking $5000 or $6000. It seems to me, though, that maybe the peak has passed?

FWIW, I like the look of an L Frame better myself (or my favourite is an L Frame with a Python barrel)

Accumulated quite a few revolvers over many years, the Python's bluing stands out aesthetically over all of
them although the polish on Korth revolvers have a black glossy look that's something else. As far as trigger pull
etc., it's a beaut. That being said, My Smith's have fabulous single action triggers as well. Python prices are way high
considering how many were made but seeing that there won't be any more coming down the pipe you may as well take the wallet hit
and satisfy "The itch". Although I really like the 586 , it`s no Python.

The Colt Python is to the Walking Dead as the M1 Garand was to Band of Brothers.
Both fantasy TV shows drove demand of firearms which were both no longer in production for a long time up through the roof and thus the huge mark up on their value. Garands about 7 years ago were beyond ridiculous. They came down quite a bit since then and holding steady now a lot lower than they were back 7 years ago.

Crazy high price does not always directly relate to the superior quality of an item over another similar item. Sometimes fantasy TV shows can attribute to the crazy price tags of items and then people automatically associate mythic qualities to the mythical price tags. It's actually hard wired into us and many sales people use this "click, whir" type behavior to influence people to pay more for items.

Is a Colt Python "worth" $6,000? Personally to me, f**k no! It's a revolver. However if you need to be the guy who gets to stand in front of the gun safe and pull it out of it's silk cloth wrapped mahogany box with white gloves to show people that you own one that bad then sure it is. A S&W 586 is just as good a gun from a mechanical stand point and accuracy at $1,000. It's a well made revolver, just like the Colt. I don't care "how nice the finish is" or "how much lighter the trigger is compared to revolver X" there's no way fackin' way it's $5000 better.
Just my 2 cents of course.

I also wonder at the reason you don't hear of any quality issues or problems with a Python is because I doubt that anyone that owns a gun that valuable or that precious is hard cycling hundreds of +p loads through it every single range trip like I do with my Pietta SAA clone.

Judging by recent events if you are looking for a 586/686 I would suggest an older one. Both new in box SW's recently acquired by an individual I know have each failed on their first trip to the range. A true lack of QC by S&W on these guns. Although S&W stands behind the product, the warranty depot is facing major delays in acquiring parts(6+ mos) mainly because it is in Canada. I also have 586's, a couple of 686's and a few pythons. Each has its own appeal. Personally I dont believe the Pythons are truly worth what the present selling prices are, but the market is driving the insanity. My quest for a Boa ended when I saw that the going rate was $7K+ USD a year or so back. :(

These guns guys are why Colt made Pythons. Now don't get me wrong I love shooting Pythons but I am like a lot of other people. There is just no way they are worth what people are paying for them. If you want one just be patient people will come to there senses, they always do and they will be way cheaper

The two guns below are

top Pre model 27 5 screw gun 6 inch barrel
bottom Is a straight model 27 no dash 4 screw gun with a 6 inch barrel

The next group pictured from left to right

left one is a Model 27-2 with a 5 inch barrel
middle one is a model 27-2 with a 6 inch barrel
right one is a Model 27-2 with a 8 3/9 inch barrel

These are a few of my more favorite ones.
