Hey everyone, like many I'm trying to save some money on shooting, and with my first kid on his way I need to cut somewhere. I had to make a choice between letting go the AR or the 1911 45acp. Well I want to try to trade my SR1911 for a 1911 chambered in 9mm. Did some research and found many positive reviews about the SAM Thunderbolt. I'm not sure I like the dust cover on it but I really like the rest of the features. The other one I took interest in is the Taurus PT1911, but can't really find good videos about it on youtube(alaways the same guy with his daughter on each video it seems). Anyone here is owning one or who has owned one? ANy comments?:)

I'm open to other suggestions

What I am looking for:
Stainless steel
Big serrations on the slide
Adjustable sights is a plus
Checkering in front of grip
Same price range as SR1911

If STI spartan was stainless steel, it would be great, but it's not :D

Thanks!

I just picked up an STI Trojan 9mm from Freedom Ventures. Shot it twice, so far, couldn't be happier. Accurate, well built, hard chrome finish. Probably more than you want to spend, but nice gun.

What about mags, do these run on regular 1911 mags or specific 9mm 1911 mags and what's the availability for them?

Don't get a 1911 in 9mm.

JMB would be rolling over in his grave. He designed the Hi-Power for the 9mm cartridge, not the 1911.

If the Browning family ain't paying for my ammo, I'll get the 9mm one :D Seriously, I already have a 92fs and SP-01 shadow to play with in 9mm, but can't let go the 1911, but can't afford the 45 for punching holes in paper targets anymore.

I'm surprised jackrabbit would entertain another S&W as he is about to set the world record for buying a new Smith and not having shot a single bullet cos it's been living with Smith & Wesson for the last 2 years in the repair depot or somewhere we are not sure exactly.. LOL

I have that exact pistol. It's a bit heavy in the hand for a 9mm, thanks to the extra weight up front, but really no more than an Sp01. For 9mm the commander length feels very good.

i do recommend going for something with adjustable sights, unless you're running n gunning at close range. Sometimes the fixed factory sights are not set up for the sort of sight picture that you want to use, which means having to get the front blade switched out.

If you're into playing the long game, watch the sponsor forums for sales. They come up often enough that paying full price for a pistol is the toll if you drive in the Want-Now lane ;)

Have a Thunderbolt, and the SAM Omega 6 9mm, which is the same thing, without the rail. If you don't like the rail, see if they will be getting more Omega 6 9mm's. It does not have adjustable sights, I had Wolverine put HI VIZ Fiber Optics on it before they shipped it, and it is dead on! It has been working flawlessly for a couple years now.

lol...I still think they lost it somewhere between Houlton and Springfield. As for the 1911, not for me...just giving the OP another 9mm option.

Learn to reload. You won't need a Browning for financial assistance. - dan

thanks kschneider, they don't seem to have the omega anymore.

Antoine22, I wish I had the $$ for it :)

The SAM military enhanced vs the Thunderbolt SS, it it really worth it to spend 340$ more for the Thunderbolt?

Thanks

I'd go for a S&W 1911 Pro Series.

I did just that this winter, got it in the EE. What a great pistol, my favorite firearm (well until I buy the next great one!).

A bunch of guys swear by their SAM 1911 at the range, nothing wrong with them from their comments. And much cheaper than the S&W.
