So I finally pulled the pin and am about to put down a deposit, and finalize payment next week on my first handgun. a SAM 1911 Military in 9mm. Hope to have it in my possession by the end of the month.

Other than shoot it and make sure it works well as it is what are some suggestions for upgrades? Good grips you guys like? Sights?

If its reliable and I like the sights I might not change anything just looking for suggestions as im new to Pistols, only done rifle/shotgun shooting so far but am interested in getting into IPSC as one of my friends is into it and it looks like a lot of fun. So figured I needed a gun, and 9mm is cheap and I like the size and heft of the 1911.

Also any suggestion on ammo?

Shoot it first and then figure out what you want after. Made the mistake of upgrading my m&p when i should've left it alone. As for ammo, whatever you can afford. But i do find barnaul leaves a lot of stubborn copper in my barrels. And winchester white box is very dirty. Ymmv.

I wish I could see one of the SAM Military 9mms in person. I'm curious what the sight picture looks like. From the pics on Wolverines website they look smaller than say Novak sights but bigger than old style Colt GI sights. Just wondering how clear the sight picture would be for me.

Shoot it lots before mucking with it ;)

The grips are plain but serviceable. I think Marstar stocks the MecGar mags, which is probably the first thing you're going to end up buying for it! They also have some nice wooden grip scales for 1911.

Yeah I was thinking some quality mags would be my first investment.

Lots of mags. Lots of ammo. Targets. Good belt, holster and mag pouches.

Shoot shoot shoot and shoot some more.

When you're done that. Go shoot again.

Funny I just ordered this pistol to from wolverine as my first restricted firearm. I ordered 2 mecgar mags from bullseye for $75. Looking forward to shooting it a lot and seeing where it goes from there. Hope you have fun with yours I plan on having lots with mine.

As others have said, shoot it first, then I would suggest attending a training class/school. Then decide what you want to do with the gun; plink, compete, both? Then do your research on what aftermarket items will truly benefit your intended use.

Been said before..and always good advise....buy 2000 rounds of ammo and shoot the hell out of it....then see if it needs anything....

I always like VZ grips on my 1911s...plenty of difference colours, styles, and textures. They're not cheap but they're my favourite 1911 grips.

I'd get s buffer and full length guide rod. That's it till you have shot it to see what you might like better.

I use those on everything that I can, including revolvers. Love the sharp texture of the tactical checkering.

Sorry, man, I have to disagree. All full-length guide rods do is make the pistol hard to disassemble without adding any real benefit, and buffers are not necessary—I had one come apart during a match and jam the pistol up solid. Spoke with the pistol manufacturer afterwards (the buffer was already in the pistol when I bought it off the EE) and they said they strongly recommended against them.

Get a good holster, mag pouches, belt and mags...then, shoot...after awhile you'll know exactly what to upgrade...if anything.
And get a good holster platform...I prefer G-Code but Safariland, Fab Defense and BladeTech all make good rigs too..probably others.

They do. I just picked up another for my Sam 9mm. I just changed the grips to the fab defense with built in magwell. My thing is being I like the feel better is flat mainspring housing over the curve. Then again ain't my first 1911.

Yet mine I only put a box thru.

I'll chime in here and fully agree with Master-G. Full length guide rods were designed for 1911's to allow the use of lighter "Target" .45 ACP loads and serve no real purpose in the 1911 style pistols of today when using "Full house" loads. 9mm is a gentle cartridge to shoot out a full size 1911 frame gun so no reason to shoot the lighter loads. Buffers, in some cases, actually cause more wear on the gun as the slide is not physically able to recoil the full length as intended, it also makes it a pain in the ass to eject loaded cartridges as well as making the gun more difficult to take apart.

As to upgrades, I'll agree with everyone else saying that you need to shoot lots of ammo out of it, then decide what you think it might need. I've always thought that 1911's looked classier with a nice set of wood grips.
