Self defense while hunting?

yes, 2 years ago in pemberton BC when I got full charged by 3 wolves out of a pack of a dozen or so. would have loved to be able to transition to a 1911 45 acp when the rifle ran out rather than fumbling for the spare mag. it all ended well for me anyhow.
I think bow hunters should be able to carry a side arm. Especially bear hunters. I've finished a few deer off with a knife. One buck had more fight left in him then I thought and I got my left arm ripped out of place. A 22 Lr pistol would be great for capping off the wounded animal
Buddy of mine put down a bear while deer hunting. He has a hearing imparment so the bear snuck up on him when he was sitting with his back to a tree. Bear spooked and so did he. Bear stood up and started at him. He put the bear down. (He won't admit to changing his underwear before calling the MNR). Didn't take them long to do the investigation and "award" him the bear. This was before cell phones had cameras; however I did get to eat some of the bear meat. Not sure if angry bears taste better but it was delicious. I know he hunts with a lever although I don't recal the caliber right now. He did say the bear was close enough that he just kept shooting until it dropped, while he was walking half -assed backwards around the tree.
If I could, I'd carry my .40 while in the woods. I hate having to bring my 12g but with the amount of coyote and bears where I'm at, I never go into the woods with my kids without having a firearm.
The old boys have carried a side piece in the bush for the last 100 years. You will never see them in a bar, in town, and they will never show you or flash it. There is sometimes a reason why these tough old buggers are still alive after spending a lifetime in the bush.

Buy an antique pistol if you want to carry a sidearm in the bush.

My wife was a little confused when it came to shooting a deer as against butchering a pig/sheep. She said she wanted the deer halal meaning to her shot and then throat cut instantly (which is a lot easier in a barn stall with a pig). I said in order to do that I would basically have to tackle the deer and cut its throat. She thought about it for awhile and asked if I thought I could do that. I patted her shoulder and said "No honey, a heart shot does the same thing". I am not sure if she believes me.
It would be nice to be able to carry a pistol when packing out meat in grizzly areas, and when sleeping in s tent. Other than that, my rifle is good for defense. Be great to have a .22 revolver for grouse, too.

I was out grouse hunting after a heavy rain, so the walking was quiet. I was working my way down a ridgeline, and heard this little noise off to my right. I got set, in case there was a flush, then saw a dark little shadow. Bloody 'coon! Then the shadow started walking toward me, and the 'coon turned into a little bear cub! It came to within 12-15 feet, then turned off to it's right. I looked in that direction, and mama stepped out from behind a deadfall, about 20' away. They both took off down the hill, but I was wondering for a few seconds what I was going to do with 2 barrels of ounce & and eight #7 1/2. Still happier with the 12-gauge in my hands than a .22 though.
I carry a few slugs just in case..

Absolutely! Whether the government 'currently' allows it or not is no reason not to get theirs heads on straight when it comes to firearms. ALL firearms shoot a projectile therefore there should only be one classification of firearm, FIREARM. What difference does it make if I bring along a NR rifle into the woods as opposed to a handgun (yes, aside from the current rules)? They are both firearms. Same goes with private property. Baffles me why one can only shoot their NR firearm on their own property. Stupid actually.
