Savage MkII failure to extract/eject...

After two years of faithful service, my brave little .22 Savage has begun to malfunction.
At first it was Failure to Extract. The casings were not "stuck" in the chamber as I could easily flick them out with the point of my leatherman. I disassembled the bolt and thoroughly cleaned, lubed, and reassembled it.
Back at the range I noticed that the ejection was also very weak (on the occasions when the extractors were doing their job). Back to my workshop for another look.
I can't see any reasons for the failures. It's a pretty simple mech--two tiny extractors and a stationary ejector waiting to launch the casing out into space...
Actually, it does eject (sort of) but the shell either makes a weak jump, or just lays there in the loading bay, sometimes even wandering down below the bolt where it gets up to mischief.
The failure to extract continues about 5 out of every 10 shots. It seems the extractors are just not gripping the rims, even tho the bolt locks into battery.
This is all with long rifle ammo, two different mfgrs.

Any ideas for a fix?

first question, What ammo were you shooting?
I've had crappy ammo that had very poorly cast bullets (lead pressed around the outside of the brass) stick inside the chamber. it was Blazer, after I noticed the horrible quality of some of them, I could tell which 1's would stick in there... luckily I had a cleaning rod in my kit that I could just push each 1 out with.

second question, after 2 years if shooting have you fully taken it apart and cleaned it?

What I did was to clean everything up, and install another C-clip from Savage OVER the existing one (on the bolt, it holds the extractor, the firring pin and some other part I can't name) . It's not really pretty to look at but it works fine. I had to order the parts from a shop out West, sorry that I don't remember the name.

Denis.

I had a few FTE with my new BV, but I, m sure it was poor quality cases. I don't know for sure but I think it was cheap bulk ammo. I only shoot better quality ammo now ,lapua, cci,Aguila and even AE and no more FTE. My brand new tr has about 400 rounds thru and not 1 FTE. A good cleaning can,t hurt,I would check the chamber for excess fouling.

Mine also hates blazer ammo. However one day i was having problems every round with extraction after i had disassembled and reassembled it. realized I had put the extractors in the wrong way lol.

I recently worked thru this same issue on my Savage Mk II BV. I checked the chamber mouth where the firing pin hits with a q-tip to see if there was a burr, no fibers pulled off the q-tip so no burr. I gave the chamber, action and bolt a thorough cleaning, still frequent failures to extract. I replaced the extractor and spring, no real improvement. I tried slamming the bolt home quite hard, some improvement but still one or two failures to extract out of a 5 rnd mag.

So I had another look at the breech face. I rubbed around the chamber mouth with the tip of a little finger. Lo and behold, I felt a burr at the edge of the bevelled cutout that the extrator fits in when the bolt is closed! So I got out my trusty Dremel, put an abrasive/rubber burr in it (this is a pretty gentle tool, not very aggresive) and carefully worked across the edge of the extractor cut then did a really light, fast pass around the mouth of the chamber.

I took the rifle to the range a couple of days later and voila! Flawless extraction, problem solved!

"Choot 'em!" ??

Thx for those suggestions, guys.
The AMMO I've been using of late has been
1) Am Eagle red box 38gr copper
2) 'Federal Game Shock' blue box (same as above)
3) And what I was using when the stoppages started:
CCI red box endorsed by some hillbilly shouting "Choot 'em!"
I hope it's not that, cos I just got two bricks of the stuff at Cabelas...

I did clean the action, bolt & chamber, but I did not check for BURRS.
That I must do.
Oh, that c-clip-- I took it off and squeezed it together, but I'm sure it
sprang apart again while I was putting it back on.
I'll try to find another one somewheres.
And I'll post again if there's any progress.

Replacing the extractor and spring made no improvement on mine. As I described, the problem wasn't those parts, it was a burr caused by the extractor rubbing on the steel of the cutout it fits into over thousands of rounds.

Yes, thanks. That's the very first next thing I'm going to check for: Burrs.
I'll keep you posted.

Blazer ammo gives me that problem in my Savage Mark II after 20 rounds fired. It need a cleaning of the chamber. I think it don't like the wax on Blazer bullets. It's the only ammo that gave me this specific problem.

CCI standard velocity has caused this issue in 2 of my guns, excessive lube on the rounds lead to a gummed up chamber pretty quickly....had to bring a long dowel to the range to pop the stuck cases out....cleaning more regularly solved my issues

but the OP mentioned it was easy to slide the case out with a knife, so that would lead me to believe his issue is something else....a very thorough cleaning first, and then checking for burrs before I'd start replacing parts...but they are cheap and savage ships quickly...have you tried calling savage yet?
