Hello,
Im looking to buy my first shotgun. I want to use it for target and bird hunting and on occassion for bear protection when Fishing remote rivers. Is there a shot gun out there that will do what i need it to do? Thanks for the help in advance!

Remington 870 with two barrels, mossberg 500 with 2 barrels. Remington has better parts availability. The mossberg is arguably more robust. There's really no need to look further than those shotguns or their variants.

If you have the budget get a semi auto or an over under. Browning and Beretta o/u guns will last more than a lifetime of reasonable abuse.

Express finish is cheap and garbage, very prone to rust. I would buy an old wingmaster, or if you have the budget a new one, or 870 police, or marine magnum.

The 870 express finish is not great, but the price reflects that. It is built like a damn tank though and I love having a rough use shotgun I can drop in the bottom of a boat or drag through the woods in the rain without remorse. Mechanically mine has been flawless. As far as rust goes, just melt some paste finishing wax into the steel and then never worry about it again. The norinco/dominion arms 870 clones are also great but they don't have the barrel package options the Remington does. If you find a nork 870 clone for a great savings don't hesitate to buy it.

It depends on your budget and whether you want new or used. An older used 870 is a good choice, as well as new or used Berretta, Benelli, Win Model 12 or SXP, or Mossberg.

Get an 870 Wingmaster 28" and pick up a shorter (18.5" - 21") barrel when you are packing. If you can do two guns, go with the Wingmaster and a Marine Magnum.
