Was the SKS a fail?

lolol That is amazing!

Love it MC nicely done. Yeah Dake before I bought and shot my first sks I was all high on the original configuration. Then it became uncomfortable to shoot. I am much happier now as I have one in an archangel.

Love the info this thread has given! When I saw my first sks was at a crappy tire and I wanted it big time! It was cheap, it looked super great and studley with the bayonet . And when I heard I could grab a case of ammo for cheap I was all over it! So I also bought an Svt and a mosin at the same time. I couldn't wait to get out and shoot the sks I cleaned that sks all night and left the others alone for the time!

Then I went to the range all excited, and started shooting it. And was just not to my liking. Hated that it was so short felt awkward , and just didn't impress. Then tried the Svt40 and was about the same just so-so.

I'd say to me the sks is like Disneyland. Disney was always supposed to be thisbig, magical place and exciting , then you get there and it's not what you thought it would be with all the lines, and outdated. Something better left in your dreams than reality. the sks just never lived up the the hype for me.

Now the mosin, the one I just bought cause it was cheap , I thought long, and bolt I wouldn't like it, and that has turned out to be my favorite ever. I guess it's everyone's perception and opinion. I ended up selling my sks and over 800 rounds left in the case to my friend and I don't miss it at all. The Svt saw maybe 50 rounds, still have it but I'd rather put my rounds through the mosin.

this.

I prefer shooting my SVT-40 to the SKS, but if I had to depend on one to keep me alive it would be the SKS for sure, a very underrated firearm in Canada right now.

At least that's my opinion fwiw

Right now, the SKS is very much my SHTF gun(s). People worried about cleaning them in adverse conditions are... Clueless. You can clean it with boiling water and a knotted shoelace, and then lube and protect it with motor oil. Don't even bother getting rid of the excess oil - cook it off with the first few rounds down the pipe - I've actually "torture tested" and SKS this way, and it ran like a champ. Cleaned it up proper afterwards, and you'd never know the difference.

So if you saying sks fail. It will probably outlast all other firearms out there in service for another century.

Nope. Nothing can come close to the Lee Enfield. It is STILL in use today by the Rangers, so thats 120 years of service. Not to mention its ceremonial uses and whatever else...

Well I was meaning SKS and its service in Russian/Soviet forces. But lets not forget that 91/30 is still being used in Ukraine as well in its sniper variant. So its 124 years for M91 and variants. By the way once a weapon platform adopted for use in Russian forces it will never be phased out and fallen out of use. At some point it will be pressed in to service again when conditions demand.
