I have a pair of Winchester 250 levers. One is my dads and it's sacred. The other I picked up a while ago with the intent that each of my kids will have the same model to use and learn on. They get to fight over who gets my dads later on in life.

Here's my problem. Cash is tight right now and I signed myself (and the kids) up for a match and it's this weekend. Although possible to use bench rest, the rifles are just to big. The lop is too much for either of them. Ideally, it's buy a youth designed rifle, but I can't right now. Would the Winchester gods strike me down if I cut the stock on the non special one? If I do, what's the best way to go about this? I have an air rifle with an adjustable stock so I should be able to get the lop measured so I only have to cut once.
 
Youtube is your friend. Watch a gun smith video on how to cut down a stock. You need a saw for ultra fine cutting.
 
My savage 3B I has a cut down stock. Sometimes at the range people say"oh too bad it's ruined " but I disagree, I love shooting that gun that grandpa cut down so it would fit my mom better, the same gun I learned on because I was small too.
 
I laugh when people say it's ruined, or to bad it's not original. who hasn't modified a car or renovated a house?
just cut the stock, in fact while you do that I'll go cut another 2 inches of a P17 barrel
 
I'd let him grow into it before I'd ever consider cutting it. Let him use something else for the match, or see if you can borrow one that fits better.
 
Ok. Common sense prevails. I just can't bring myself to do it. Because I left this to the last minute, I came up with another plan. I'm in process of making an adapter to use the stock from my Crosman M4-177. Going to look goofy as hell, but if it holds I'm laughing.

Much better than ruining a collectable for just one match. Also, to get good with any gun - a lot of practice is needed before hand. What is it that the old timers say - take one practice shot for every yard of distance with a new rifle. Those that advised you to cut the butstock did not care about value because it was not there skin in game.

Well that was a failure. Oh well. If I get my hands on another stock, I'll do it right and cut it. I should have thought of this weeks ago.
