6.5X55 is a fine round for that. Loaded to M96 pressures it's good. Up it to modern 6.5SKAN (higher pressure commensurate with modern rifles) and it shines. More case capacity and similar pressure to .260 rem.

terry at black art rifle built the rifle, the scope is a super sniper 20x42
i have since changed to a sightrone 8x32x56 after (I missed 2 bull elk to solar glare on the super sniper)
im also running the new noslar 142 LR and reduced my powder load
but the rifle is a tack driver at 300 1/2 group and a 3 inch at 600
barrel is a kreiger 1:8 -24 inches long with a 2 inch break
custom turned from heavy varmint to a .730 muzzle diameter
