need cheap 1911 opinions

Hi,
I don't want to sound snobbish but most of my firearms are higher end quality. I tend to favor fewer guns of better quality and this has satisfied me and served me well. But now, I am looking to add a 1911 to the stable. Of course, I want it in .45 acp. I don't want to spend much as this pistol will be strictly a shooter, a fun range toy to get more experience with .45 acp. I am tempted by Norinco's and Girsan's. They are certainly cheap to buy. But I am afraid of the quality. I am not much of a tinkerer and would like an out of the box shooter. I am looking for reasonable accuracy and for a solidly built gun. I have this maybe stupid impression that if I buy a Norinco, it will be so cheap, it will blow in my face.
Opinions guys?

I have a Norinco and a Taurus in 1911.
Have stripped them both completely down and the Norinco appears to be just as good as the Taurus.
That being said I am no gunsmith so take it for what it's worth.
If anything I have had more problems with the Taurus.
 
Ruger, Remington, STI Spartans. - solid middle of the pack stuff

I've found the quality of the shooters arms stuff to run hot and cold (I get the cold ones). I doubt they have any real QA at the factory. You won't be happy with a norc if you don't like to tinker.
 
I'll certainly take a look at STI spartans, Sam's and others mentionned.
What about Girsan's ?

Been into 1911's for ~ 30 yrs now. Have easily owned > 100 different 1911/1911A1's in that time, including more than a few Colt 1911/1911A1, Government models, Gold Cups, USGI 1911A1's etc and even a few Norinco 1911's...... Still have a few Norinco 1911's..... Personally, I've never had a lemon Norinco 1911 yet.

For an econo starter 1911 I'd be inclined to try out one of the SAM version 1911's, though.

Theres nothing wrong with the Norinco 1911's, a little rough on the fit & finish compared to some other brands but they do work pretty good.
 
I have had a number of Norks, and I am almost ashamed to say that a couple of them shot right along some "name brand" 1911's as far as accuracy goes. They are dead nuts reliable and as tough as anything. Not sure what metal they make them out of, but it is extremely hard stuff. A short step up in price would get you a used Remington R1 which is way better quality than the price indicates.

NO. No, no, no.

You DON'T want a cheap gun. You are wise to buy the best you can afford and to cheap out on a gun in God's Caliber is a disservice to yourself and the holy 1911. A good .45 that will shoot like a top and be one that you can hand down to your kids will set you back at least $1300.00 and probably quite a bit more. Save your cash, bite the bullet and get the best! Your skill and the awesome .45ACP cartridge will do the rest!

One lung speaks the truth. Although, sometimes it's nice to have that Norc "range beater" in the bag...The one "new friends" met at the range get to shoot...know what I mean?

But remember that beaver tails, forward serrations, and anything other than polished blued steel and the number 7 make Baby John Mose' cry.

Space guns are an abomination and a work of the devil.



.....a cheap gun makes a good first gun, unless you're one of those of us who were born knowing that we'd love the 1911 ;)

You stand to lose less selling it if it's not your thing
 
Thanks all for your answers. One Lung Wonder's answer really spoke to the amateur of good quality in me. i guess if I want to be satisfied, I'll have to buy quality.
