I am sort of torn between these 2 calibers, never had much involvement with the 308 cal, mostly 30-06. what would be the pros and cons between the 2 what would I be better off with? mostly for deer and maybe the odd moose.

Both will do the job just fine.
The 30-06 is very early 1900s technology, the 308 mid 1950s technology. With the development of more efficient powders and the advancements in automatic rifles the shorter stroke required to cycle the 308 while delivering very nearly the same power was the big advantage.
At the common distances most hunt game at you would be splitting hairs to claim any advantage 1 has over the other. 308 is more commonly available of late as it has gained popularity due to the amount of surplus ammo available, as the 30-06 surplus ammo dries up.

only thing the 30.06 has over the .308 is that it can push heavier bullets a bit better. or so it's been said and what I've read.

I had a 30.06 while my brother had the .308. we never saw a real difference shooting anything up to 180g.

my XL7 had lower felt recoil than his 88 though. may have had to do with his rifle being a bit lighter, or perhaps I had the better recoil pad, since my rifle was newer.

30.06 will drive bullets over 150 grains more effectively and generally to a slightly higher velocity...the gain increases as the bullet weight increases. For deer there is no advantage..for heavy game, with a 200 or 220 gn bullet the 30-06 has the advantage.

The ought-six has a little more snort.
You could fart the difference.
I own both.
Never shot a deer or moose yet that could tell the difference.
They were all dead whether dropped with an oh-eight or an ought-six.

how about just learn to stalk closer and save all that powder- the difference using 180s in mpbr is 267 for the 308, 276 for the 06 and 325 for the 300 win mag, so you're paying an awful lot for 50 yards range- the way us old fellers see the difference is like this- 180 and under, 308 - it's a more efficient case and the 180 is as heavy as you can go without sitting the bullet IN THE POWDER- ie a compressed load- now there are ways round this- a 308 on an 06 action- this would allow you to seat the bullets longer , but you begin to run out of cartridge length- might as well use an 06 and take advantage of the longer case -and if you want to step up to 200 grains or more you can- if you want to step up to the 300, you might as well go to the 338 win mag and REALLY put the hurt on them

Both are more power than you need for moose.

The power difference is not significant unless you are doing something real special - like elk at 600 yards.

The big difference is the action length and how the various rifles fit you. I suggest you start by finding the rifle that fits you the best and then take whatever caliber that offers.

Ballistically they're identical. Difference is a half inch of case and about 100 fps with like bullet weights. Either one with 165 grain bullets will kill any game you care to hunt. Your decision is do you want a long action or a short.
There is no game in North America that requires a magnum of any kind to kill with one shot.

If recoil is a problem for you, go for 308. The 30-06 tends to kick more. As far as terminal ballistics, you can look up the numbers, but if your shot placement is decent, you will not see the difference.

Flip a coin or choose the one in the model that you prefer - and if one you like is on sale, buy that.

As a "hunting rifle" you would probably never know the difference one to the other - and nothing you shoot would ever know the difference.

Bob's corner store on the corner of middle and nowhere streets will have 30.06 and 308 rounds on the shelf, so no advantage there one way or the other.

All else being equal a 308 will thump with about 3lbs less recoil than a 30.06 - so if at 30.06 is at the edge of your comfort zone you would prefer the 308.
