Changes Coming to Sunday Hunting Rules
Department of Natural Resources
July 23, 2015 10:54 AM

The Department of Natural Resources is lifting the ban on Sunday hunting for the first two Sundays of general deer hunting season.

The change will apply to all wildlife in season on those dates except moose.

In 2015, Sunday hunting will be allowed Nov. 1 and 8.

"Nova Scotia's natural resources are here for everyone to enjoy and use in a sustainable manner," said Natural Resources Minister Zach Churchill.

"After a public consultation and discussions with stakeholders about a range of options, I wanted to find a balance on this issue that would take everyone's positions into account. Allowing hunting on the first two Sundays of general hunting season achieves this balance."

Amendments to the Wildlife Act regulations will also clarify the distance hunters need to stay back from Christmas tree and agricultural operations. Amendments will also make it easier for hunters to help farmers deal with nuisance wildlife.

Public safety was an important consideration in the decision. Hunting accidents are rare in Nova Scotia and almost never involve non-hunters. There will be an awareness campaign closer to hunting season to help ensure Nova Scotians know about the Sunday hunting change.

Landowner rights was an area of interest during consultations. Hunters are strongly urged to respect landowners' wishes about hunting on private property.

Congrats to Nova Scotia hunters, and to the Nova Scotia Federation of Anglers and Hunters for pushing for change.

That's all that came of it? That's pretty weak in my opinion. I like to hunt various types of game throughout the year and only getting 2 days extra just for deer season is weak.

I would see it as a place to start. See how it goes, convince government its a good idea, and hopefully you will see an expansion in future.

Did you even read the article?

It's better than it was last year, but if you don't like it I'm sure they can still change it back in time for next year.

Quit complaining

Well said,
Hopefully this will be a start, and next year when these two Sundays don't cause the world to end, Sundays will be open for the whole season.

I'm sorry, but this is the first I've heard of such a thing. You can't hunt on sundays? What kind of law is that?! Or am I mistaken. Like I said, I've never heard of this before. Thanks for any info you guys can give me. Good hunting and shooting, Toni.

Next they will allow drinking and gamboling on Sunday, then you are going to see woman allowed in drinking establishments!
Prepare for the end of the world.

Well you are all going to hell now...

One has to wonder about these things, not that many years since Alberta FINALLY allowed it. Oh well, was always a good excuse to sit in camp and sip a little whiskey. :) They have Sunday shopping there yet? Remember a controversy about that.

Grizz

When Sunday hunting was being discussed in SK, the end-of-the-world types went haywire. However, cooler heads prevailed and we have had Sunday hunting for several years now. Never made a lick of difference that I can see as far as negative stuff. It sure helped the people who are stuck working Monday to Friday - it doubled their in-season hunting days! I'm not sure, but I think it was most likely the old Tommy Douglas "we can't let them get ahead of us" crowd that did the most whining.

Saskatchewan still has a good population of old, washed up CCFers who would have us all working on collective farms while they sat in a nice office in Regina thinking up new ways to curb or stop the evil capitalists from becoming independent of the government dole.

If you want to hunt various types of game then move to Alberta, BC or another province that has more than three types of big game animals.

Personally I'm shocked we won this one. Must have been all the times I filled out the online questionnaire!

It's kind of funny hearing all the same BS arguments we heard here in Newfoundland years ago when it came to debating Sunday hunting, shopping, etc. When finally introduced, there were lots of arbitrary restrictions and limitations on hunting. Total BS, but it got the proverbial camel's nose under the tent. Within a couple of years most of the crap restrictions were abandoned and Sunday hunting was expanded. I guess not enough berry pickers and hikers were slaughtered indiscriminately by Sunday hunters to justify said restrictions. Stick with it Nova Scotia and keep the pressure on and eventually the BS goes away.

Dam, you guys in Nova Scotia have it all now.
You get to shoot on Sundays when you all should be in church ;)
Here in Delta we have to be outside the dyke to shoot on Sundays and contrary to popular belief there are Blk.-Tail Deer and Blk. Bear too in Delta.
Hasnt been a cougar sighting (4 legged ones that is) in a few years now.
Enjoy your new founded shooting opportunities and as they say in the BC-Wildlife Federation ''kids that learn to hunt, trap and fish are not the ones out robbing little ole ladies of their pension cheques.''

Very glad to see at least somethings being done. As a Nova Scotian hunter, this isn't much, but until people start saying they are unhappy about it nothing will change. Kinda hamstrings people to only hunt one day a week, if they aren't on Pogue!
