I took delivery of a brand spanking new Remington Versa Max yesterday and upon doing the required initial cleaning the inside of the barren looks used. Like a fair bit used! Would Remington fire this gun several times before shipping it off to a vendor for resale?

I'll try to get pictures tonight when I get home.

Mine looked the same way when I got it, When I asked about I was told it was test fired to make sure everything worked, due the pined mag tube and spring at 5rnds

Oh no, this isn't a little swarf or soot from not cleaning it, this is grooves from shot being fired through the barrel. It's pretty heavy "wear" for a new gun that has only ever been fired once or twice at the factory.

My phone can't get decent pictures of it but it has ball or shot grooves pretty good just past the chamber.

Are you sure they are scratches or groves and not plastic residue left behind from the wad . if they are in fact scratches or groves return the gun to your dealer or Remington warranty . there should not be scratches or groves in a new barrel sounds like a QC issue at Remington .

I just cleaned it again really good with a brush and got lots more dirt out of it but these striations are still there. By the looks of it they are right where the shell would open up and extend down the barrel maybe a couple inches and then it smooths out like glass.

I may go to my local bass pro and look down the barrel of another new Remington shotgun and see if its the same or not. If it's not the same as mine then I'll call remington on Monday morning and ask them about it. Then I'll call the dealer I bought it from if something doesn't jive.

It should not have any marks in the barrel. I would return it to the dealer and exchange it for another one if you can. Going through warranty is a pain in the ass.

Make certain you use a good cleaning solvent that dissolves plastic that might remain from the test fired wads. It would be awfully embarrassing to attempt to get warranty service if this is your problem. I have had difficulty getting marks out of an older 870 barrel that I assumed was wear but using a good solvent cleaned it nicely. This is less of a problem with highly polished barrels.

If they are actual grooves then launch it back to the manufacturer!

I cleaned it again with a brush and some Mpro 7 cleaner, it looks slightly better.

The guy at Remington said they shoot around 5 shells to test the gun, usually a full mag worth of shells. He also said its between me and the dealer if the gun was "used" by them before selling it and that if it functions properly then whats the issue. I was kind of shocked at that considering its not a used gun or a cheap gun. And I know if I call the store I bought it from and question it, the reply will be "no we never use our new guns and then sell them as new guns" so lesson learned, no matter how many good deals I have had with a dealer, its still better to drive the 2-1/2 hours each way and inspect it myself rather than have it shipped sight unseen.

Those guns aren't known for super high quality anyhow. The one I had was an example of that a rem express falls in the same quality in my book.

Remingtons have been like that for many many years it is no big deal and I have a ton of them
I don't know how many test rounds they fire out of them today but it is a few since I have been buying hulls from some of the guys that buy them from the factory on gun broker for a couple of years. Especially 10ga and 3 1/2 12ga which are impossible to find in canada
Enjoy the new gun
Cheers
