I received a cow tag in the mail today... I'm pumped. Even though the MNR website states we wont be notified till Aug 1st got mine today.

I'm surprised though I applied alone and the guaranteed group size is 6. Our whole group applied as individuals this year.

Last year we didn't go because of the cut in tags then I was told their was surplus tags in our WMU looks like that may be the case again this year since I got a tag alone.

That is not how it works...

You just got lucky in the random individual draw... it is always better to apply as a group... if you don't meet the guaranteed group size, you go into the large group allocation, if you don't meet the large group number, you are automaticallly entered in the individual draw... once one group member draws a tag all other group members are removed from the draw, this leaves you with the maximum Pool One applications for the next year.

Unless your unit had more tags available than applicants, the unit did not have Surplus Tags... it sounds like your success rate is not 100%... so there were no surplus tags.

We will be calling August 1st... fingers crossed.

Surplus tags come from the 5% that are set aside for the Northern residents draw, but are left over where there are not enough qualified Northern residents that applied in those WMU.

They should cut it down to 2% and let the rest go in the main draw.

We have always applied in a group, to guarantee us tags, but over the past two years the group size has grown larger than our party of group A hunters, this is the second year that an individual has been allocated at tag. Last year I heard of another party that had four applicants and nobody was allocated a tag then all 4 got surplus tags after calling in...

The whole system is a load of BS I know close to 20 guys that drew single name bull tags last year. That is supposedly impossible.
Yet it happened.

And while I'm at it why the hell do we in Ontario pay some organization in the U.S.
To do our big game draws for us?
Do we not have anyone in Ontario qualified to do it.? Keep jobs at home.

Call it what it is

It is still better to apply as a group whether you meet the guaranteed number or not... unless you want to take a chance on receiving multiple tags... applying as a group gives you the best chance for NEXT years draw by having the maximum pool one applicants... regardless... all unsuccessful groups are entered into the individual draw anyway.

And you say you "heard" of a group who did not receive tags in the draw and then all got surplus tags... if that was the case they got the tags in another unit.

What unit are you referring to? It would be pretty easy to check the stats.

WMU15B for the last 22yrs... Like I said we have been applying in a group since it was introduced but when the guaranteed group size outnumber the amount of hunters we decided to apply as individuals.. It has worked out two years in a row.

The group that received the four surplus tags I think applied to WMU 16 this conversation happened last summer so I may be wrong about which wildlife unit it was. The guy was installing my bell satellite and seen my game room which started a conversation about moose hunting, his 4 person group was unsuccessful in the lottery they called the hotline during the surplus tag allotment day and they all got a tag. Fact or fiction I cant verify it but I do believe it. Now I don't know if it was bow, rifle, muzzleloader whatever but if you believe him which I do, how can there be any surplus tags if the draw had unsuccessful applicants...

^^^^^^^^ your last comment is bang on the money. How is it possible to have a surplus tag.
Is there a WMU anywhere in Ontario that has more tags than applicants ?
I work in a place with 4200 employees. There is a group of 13 that has for the last 2 years abandoned putting in as a group because they didn't get a tag even though meeting guarantee size.
Last year they put in all single again and drew 6 tags 4 bull and 2 cow.
Two other guys at work father and son only hunt together put in single guess what 2 bull tags. Two guys at my gun club put in Ta da presto 2 tags they hunt together no group.
The bull I shot was drawn by my buddy Jim single name just 2 of us big bull.
I'm thankful for the screw up that made it possible.

But this supposed fair draw is all BS BS BS BS

Our game animal and fish management, and fairness to sportsmen and women in Ontario I would guess is probably the worst in Canada.

You can thank the provincial government for not respecting sportsmen or the resources or the revenue for gutting the MNR to the point of making them

My calf tag arrived yesterday yippee. Money well spent.
Just cancelled cabin rental in WMU 40. The camp owner says there 9 cabins will likely be empty. Tags went from 104 to 14 I believe but I don't have regs. In front of me.

Read my previous post about how we end up with surplus tags. It is entirely possible for someone to not draw a tag and there be surplus in that area.

I've done it myself. Not been drawn for a tag, and got a surplus tag in the same wmu. twice. See above.

I've applied faithfully for 17yrs and have never drawn a moose tag. The draw system here in Ontario sucks large. I know a guy who was 20 plus years and finally drew a tag. Another fella had his licence for 2 years drew a tag. I know it's a lottery , but come on. (Maybe I'm just really un lucky) Our draws are done by a company south of the border, not even in Canada. I'm in the same boat as Roccoskeet in WMU 40 with our tags dropping like a stone. And with the new regs for moose hunting calves, it will be a pumpkin patch of hunters in our area. I've given up on hunting moose in Ontario until the MNR get there #### together , get more people out in the field ,figure out and deal with real problems of why our moose populations are dropping. Ie: Bears (predators),native harvest(just ask for numbers, I don't care they hunt them), winter kill, etc. instead of determining the numbers from behind a desk. That's my view on the moose hunt, and no I didn't buy a tag this year. I put the money in a jar to start saving up for my out of province hunt for moose....either Yukon or Newfoundland....

It sounds like some people on here aren't filling out their draw applications properly. The group I am in have gotten at least a bull and cow tag sometimes more for the last 16 years. We got a bull tag in the mail just the other day and we haven't gotten everyone's tags back yet. I've never tried as an individual yet but my friend tried this year and I'm interested in seeing how he does. I guess maybe it depends on the wmu you apply for. I agree the system for applying is a little hard to understand at times.

Are you attributing guys not getting drawn for 17-20 years to not filling out the draw application properly ?

And if your group has drawn multiple tags for 16 in a row you should all be millionaires also if your smart. Because if I had a run for ####ING luck like that going I'd be buying lottery tickets also.

With moose as scarce as the MNR thinks they are in reality a tag should never be given to a single applicant.
Ya I know how un-fair to a single. But if moose are that scarce better to serve the masses than the single.

No millionaires here that's forsure lol well maybe as individuals it's different like I said I've never applied as one. But as a group maybe we have been lucky idk lol As far as what the ministry says maybe they are on the decline. I know this last year we wnt to our area and we were done in 2 days tags full. The year before it snowed like crazy there were no tracks to be found at all and there were bears everywhere = no tags filled. Last year though we really noticed how many less hunters there were compared to previous years. Our area used to be pretty busy and it's been slowing down real fast the past couple years.
