So I've got my grandfathers twin mannlichers which he used for hunting since around the 70's. They are absolutely beautiful firearms in excellent shape. I've been taking them out shooting a few times and I'm no amateur when it comes to firearm maintenance, but this two guns just intimidate me!

They seem like they are fairly valuable and I wonder if I should be using them often or leave them alone. I'm pretty much the only person in my family who shoots them, and although I haven't taken them out hunting yet, I know I will soon. Anyone have some advice for how to deal with nice guns like these?

See forum member Why Not's signature line. They're beautiful rifles with hunting pedigrees that came from honest use by your grandfather. Cherish them the way you should...through honest use.

Very diligently and carefully.

You got the scopes and rings too I hope?

Yah, there are some old scopes, both 4X mag, I believe one is a "Redfield". Maybe I'll take a look at them and post them in another section of the forum.

Nice! What calibers? 7x57 and 30-06 are my guesses. It may be 8x57?

The full stock is 30-06, and the other one is 207 Win. I think he preferred the 207 when hunting, but I am big fan of the 30-06. You can also see that he had a smithy add in different safeties for the rifles. As far as I can tell, the safeties on the bolts don't work any longer. I'm not sure they can be fixed either.

Very beautiful rifles. I would not use them to "push bush" of other hard work. That said, they were made to hunt and need to be used. Your Grandfather would love to see a big buck harvested with his beloved guns. You grandkids will also love to use them if taken care of. No wet Alaskan moose/bear hunts :). You have been blessed with an extraordinary gift use it wisely. Aj

Enjoy those beautiful rifles as was intended. I just can't understand why people save rifles for someone else. Take the Winchester commemoratives for example,if I owned any of them, they would get used...not abused but definitely enjoyed.Unfired rifles lack character imo.
