I have decided to enter my first CQB match after observing for two matches. At 60 yrs of age it seems like the perfect sport for an old adrenaline junkie. If there are any tips or suggestions for setting up gear, practicing or something I missed I would appreciate hearing them. I have a 1911 chambered in 9mm with 4 magazines a belt, IMI holster and double mag holder. My rifle is 14 inch M4 with scope, BAD lever and single point sling. Ammo is pre loaded on stripper clips ready for speed loader. I have a chest rig with dump pouch and the usual magazine pouches, 5 aluminum mags and two steel for a total of 7.
Thanks for your Input.

You will only need 2 pistol mags and 5 rifle mags for the shoots, but it won't hurt to bring along the others for spares in case something goes wrong. You will be given a loadout sheet for each stage so loading the mags even without the stripper is fine as the loadout must be followed by everyone . Best bet is to go out and see what works for you and what does not, then adjust your kit from there. Have fun and be safe. Everyone was a newb at sometime, nuthin wrong with that as we gotta start somewhere . Go with an open mind and if your not sure about stuff, ask those who do know.
Regards

Rain gear on the off chance the foo is weak or mis-timed. They stop for lightning but not for precipitation.

A fast lunch because the time available for eating is limited. Bring everything needed to the bay, avoid taking the time to go back to the car.

Leave your cell phone and any other communication device in the car, do not bring it to the bay.

Yup do come to my clinic first. All depends on your comfort level. No need to rush unless you really feel that urge. Either way you will learn lots and lots. That's what is important. It's all a great journey.

Cheers, Barney

There is a practice shoot in the morning, before the "match". The RO will tell you what you are about to do before each shoot. ( 2 shots per target, or 1 shot per target, etc.) pay attention to this.

You will make mental errors. We all do. You will have fun. we all do. You will look forward to doing better next time. Some of us actually do get better.

A clinic would be great. My first match is at Borden. If anyone knows of a clinic closer I would be interested.

Take a clinic when you can but don't wait and miss out on some match fun in the mean time.

Sounds like you have the basics for kit. Check the kit list in the CQB stickies above.

If you can, make sure all your mags feed well and seat on a closed bolt (as already mentioned). Ensure your rifle works with the BAD lever, I've seen it cause problems on a couple of rifles. If it works, great, if it causes malfunctions (bolt won't cycle or lock back on an empty mag) pitch it.

Further to the above, if you have watched a couple of matches already you are ahead of where I started. I jumped in cold many years ago.

IMO - you will gain as much or more from a clinic AFTER you have participated in a match. The instruction may well sink in better if you already have some experience and can relate to what is being taught.

Sign up, come out and have fun participating...don't wait.

EDIT: You can't learn or enjoy the journey by staying home from events waiting for clinics.

^^^Very true

When I shot my first match, I had iron sights, cheap mags and cheaper gear. I would honestly just start out the same way. Every match you participate in you find out what works and what doesn't work for you. You may find that having 1 mag pouch in a certain spot works better than having it in the original spot. I'm constantly re-configuring my gear. Don't be nervous! I guarantee your first match will be better than what you expected!

In the privacy of your basement, do some dry fire drills. Remember; practice makes permanent. Perfect practice makes perfect.
