Was leafing through some old National Geographics, story on Nunavut, when I spotted this picture. Not sure how well it will come out and had to fold it, actually a little longer shot. Caption says it was a one shot kill, Magnum lovers, despair. :)

That MkVII ball 174grFMJ with it's long high B.C shape and instability in flesh, struck that bear front on and started to turn sideways at about 3 to 4 inches in and probably went through 360 degrees before coming to a rest back in his spine area with a decent wound channel delivering the whole 2400ftlbs. It was an ouch moment for the bear from the old .303British.

Appears bear is turning after receiving the hit and the shooter has lowered to work the bolt for round two........

or maybe it's all wrong, I'm just trying to add some drama to the still,............;)

Highly unlikely to be Mk VII ball 174gr FMJ. Natives know better. Nor would there be any bullet turning. Think drill. That's what ball does. 2400 ft-lbs. is ME too.
Magnum lovers should still despair though. Ain't no game in North America that requires any kind of magnum to kill. Magnums are the greatest marketing scheme in history.

Magnums are for that as close to instant kill you can get at 300 yards so you don't have to spend a day digging through brush to find the game. At 25 yards, yup 303 is great.

Inuit use a lot of .223 for shooting everything including bears. The snowmobile is the actual weapon. There's nothing they can't get within 50 yards up there and pace it til it dies. When I was there a box of .303 was 150 bucks. It was explained to me that they'll shoot it and just wait for the animal to die as they can't get away. Imagine if in the south if we never had to worry about animals hitting the thick stuff after being shot, and not having 6hrs of heavy work to cut a trail 50 yrds....

That was a bit of humor on my part, I just wanted to show an example of what the every day use of the Ranger rifle was likely to be. :)

Hey - I just thought of something. When we calculate the energy of a bullet, we take into account the velocity and the weight but what about the energy which is stored in the spin of the bullet? How much energy does it take to spin the bullet?

We might have a real difference in the energy contained in a large caliber bullet which is spinning really quickly - much more than a small calibre light one.

I will leave this little discussion now - a beaver needs killing just now.

Working/ talking/ competing against Rangers I have no doubt that the 174gr FMJ causes tremendous wounds and results in dead game.
Lots of people will say that FMJ causes ice pick wounds, I know the exit wound from a non expanding 62gr fmj peeled my buddies thigh open to the tune of three 6" cuts at 12, 3 and 6 o'clock and the resultant flaps of meat. The fact he still survived and still has two legs is amazing and a testament to modern first aid and surgical treatment.

Somewhere on here there's a chart of the permanent wound cavity caused by typical FMJ ammo from WW2 calibres and modern cartridges. The amazing thing is how large the permanent cavity is from those old rounds, and how closely they managed to duplicate it with the 556 round.

Rangers are issued IVI soft point basically identical to commercial.

Thanks for the picture, I've never seen the newer IvI soft point ammo. Lot's of it around in years gone by. This brings a question to mind, do you think IvI(Imperial) will ever hit the civilian market again with rifle ammunition?
I fired umpteen boxes of 215grKKSP's now theres a round that would penetrate. In fact I'd like to see it up against the MkVII in ballistic gelatin. I'm betting it will go 8-10 inches further than the FMJ. Doesn't sound rational ,but remember the FMJ will upset guaranteed and lose it's ability for depth of penetration(bad wound nonetheless), but those old long round nose 215 grainers at a modest 2170 fps, will plow deeper I'm guessing.
I got to find some old 215KKSP now, I've got a fair bit of MkVII, I just need to mix the gelatin lol.
