I don't know what it is about Savage or other rifle makers who put short bolt handles on their guns. I found I'd rap my knuckle on the scope every time I raised the handle. I bought one from http://gladesarmory.com/savage/68/savage-axis-tactical-bolt-handle-right-hand-stainless-wblack-cross-hatch-knob.html I don't know if that link is allowed however I don't know of any sponsors who make or sell a handle / knob to fit the Axis. It is probably an inch longer than the factory setup and rapping the knuckle won't happen again. I am waiting for my camera to recharge and will take some pics and with a side x side comparison.

Get any pics of this yet? I'd like to buy one for my axis as well, just wanna hear that it works well and is worth it.
I do, They reworked it so it now has primary extraction. Guess they got a lot of emails asking about that and while they said they had no returns or complaints, Guess that got them to reconsider doing it right. I like that I don't smack my knuckles on the scope now. Would I buy another YES.

Looks good, same issues with the non axis models, my model 16 was doing that too, I built a handle out of aluminum (pictures in other threads I don`t want to hijack yours) I like the glades armory piece, but it seems a little bit obtuse for a hunting-bush rig, but if your happy that's all that matters.

Would you mind posting a picture from behind the rifle with the bolt all the way up to see what clearance you have now?

Right now this is the best pic I have. Will try for better. As you can see it beats rapping the knuckles. If I had to guess the clearance is about 3/16 of an inch. That'd be in between 1/8 and 1/4 inches.

Yup, decent clearance for the thumb and forefinger now, it seems to be a fair bit longer to keep your fingers away from the scope.

There's alot of things the savage actions having going for them, but they have that double lug 90 dgree bolt lift, whereas rifles like the browning and tikka have the three lug 60 degree, it makes a big difference, savage should at least revisit their bolt handles to provide a bit better clearance, I know my "butter knife" style bolt handle I did may not be to everyone's liking for appearance but it was such an improvement over the factory short handle with fat round knob.

How do you get your knuckles on the scope while operating the bolt?
I lift the bolt with the (upwards facing) palm and pull it back with the pinkie and ring fingers.

the open hand technique here (but now I know what you mean)

Since were on the topic of bolt handles for savages;
I started building one for my B mag today, it's a bit rough for shape but should fit and function much better then that ugly thing that came from factory when I'm all finished up:

I see glades makes them for the B mag as well, but I'm not working as much these days with the economy slowing down so it's easier to justify the time in the garage then another rifle expense, plus I can fit it to the stock a bit better.
