If I hand cycle the action and keep the bolt to the rear I can engage the safety easily. But if I squeeze the trigger with the action to the rear the hammer seems to be released ever so slightly raising the bolt a bit not allowing the safety to engage. When live firing and the action is empty and to the rear I cannot engage the safety either. The rifle is a Winchester M1 with a Winchester hammer and safety. Also I recently re parkerized the parts and prior to this I never experienced this issue. Any ideas how to fix this ? Thank you.

You indicate that the safety worked OK prior to re-Parkerizing. Freshly re-parked parts can have a rough surface which causes them to bind. Some ideas;

-check that the stud on the side of the safety is fully seated in the hole of the trigger housing and put a drop of oil on the stud from outside and work back and forth
-is the safety bent
-check that the clip ejector spring is fully seated on the post at the bottom side of the trigger housing
-a worn or deformed clip ejector spring can cause problems with safety function
-when the trigger housing assembly is removed from the rifle with the hammer cocked does the application of the safety cause the hammer to move downwards so that the hammer hooks are removed from contact with the trigger? Application of the safety will cause the upper surface of the hammer to move farther away from the bolt. Could be that the lower surface of the safety arm which engages the bolt is worn.

Your trigger housing assembly passes the safety lever function check. When the safety is applied and removed with the trigger housing assembly out of the rifle does the safety move without too much resistance? If this seems OK I might be inclined to try a different clip ejector spring. How does the clip ejector work when ejecting a clip of dummy ammo from the rifle?

When the trigger group is out of the action I can engage the safety rather easily. I worked the parts trying to ware them in and as you suggested I also replaced the clip ejector spring and this helped. I am now able to engage the safety with the action to the rear easily. But if I depress the trigger when the action is to the rear again I can feel the bolt rise a bit and now it is much harder to engage the safety, but it will engage after a lot of effort. I hope I am explaining this right.

Glad the swap of the clip ejector helped. You really only need to be able to apply the safety in two situations; one is with the action locked to the rear before inserting a clip and the other is when the rifle is loaded with the action fully forward. The ability to apply the safety while depressing the trigger with the action to the rear isn't an operational requirement. I just tried to do this with several of my Garands and it does not work. By pressing the trigger with the action to the rear you are exerting pressure on the hammer to the extent that the safety will not engage it properly. The important things are that your trigger group passes the safety lever function check and that the safety can be applied and released with the action fully forward and locked to the rear as the safety mechanism is intended to function.
