imo a Sambar is tougher than any cousin of the Red deer...period.

eland caused some minds to wander too far from the Question, should I of mentioned a Kudu? or should I have just kept it really simple so as you knew I meant "Big game"

I think you probably shoot select one, ideally the most affordable and buy a few boxes of the same ammo and shoot two or more boxes (more if you can afford to cash/time wise) and practice. Note where she impacts at various ranges on a piece of paper and tape it to the rifle. In my opinion too many folks worry about group sizes for hunting rifles. If you know your rifle only groups 6-8" at 300 yards, just limit your shots to under 300. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah mate great way to go about it, I do similar with my current loadings.

I been looking into the TTSX and maybe 1.5 at 100, will give me the extra trajectory to 400m over my current load which drops around 30 or so inches..... this one says should stay flatter longer (20 inch).

I use paper an aim at a point, measuring drop at certain dist..... I too believe its the way to go..

nah never claimed to be shooting 300m with no scope, what I did say was your 270 in the safe has no scope on it, hence no load would be sighted in..yeah!?

yeah mate for sure, I understand that. ill be hunting locally though on Sambar deer , was gifted the ammo but the variety is killin me ahaha

yeh the AB is top in my book for a Jacket an core bullet. I have used them in the .270 years ago and more recently it my go to load in 308win, 150gr all the way.. bunch in the bullet jar !

Sorry for hijacking this thread. Has anyone got first hand experience with the 130gr barnes ttsx bullet at longer ranges, lets say 400yds. Do they open up reliable. MV would be 3100 fps in my rifle.

Shot a mule deer buck at 409m last November, high lung shot, took the bottom portion of the spine with it and exited. Exit hole was about the size of a tooney. Not sure of muzzle velocity, 55 grns of imr 4350, fed match mag primer. 130 ttsx.

Thanks for your reply, those bullets shoot tight in my rifle and so do hornady 130 sst's. I'm trying to decide which bullet would be best for long range on Mule Deer. Good to hear your experience with them. cheers.
 
Edited my post above. High lung shot took out "bottom" portion of spine. Lol. Ttsx work great, Ive never recovered a Barnes bullet from a big game animal, all pass through's. I find some guns shoot well with them, some don't.
 
from what I been reading regarding the TTSX, a lot of them happen to be staying inside of critters.

but on the flip just as many are going through.

im going to first use up the Corelokt reloads I have, then im going to use the TTSX Barnes loadings and give them a good whirl, once that happens ill report on my experiences with this mono bullet.

Sounds like a good plan. I recovered a nicely expanded 225gr. TSX from my .35 Whelen under the hide on the off-shoulder. Wouldn't be my first choice for deer though.

So...I've apparently managed to do something to screw up all the other rifles that I would normally choose for this hunt...and the only one left is a .270...for which I have no ammo...and which hasn't even got a scope mounted on it?

And somehow I still think I deserve to go on this hunt???

Geez, every single moose I've ever shot with a .270 has been a complete pass through with spectacular results, and being several hundred pounds lighter, I don't see an elk knowing the difference.
