So......

I know a guy

He's had this nork receiver sitting around for a while. He's always wanted to build something off of it.

Well he's just come into a modest bit of cash, not enough to buy a car (well a sh*tty used car), and while he could just "buy an LRB" he always kinda wanted to build a full on custom M-14ish rifle......

So "my friend" is thinking......

A medium weight Krieger short chambered with a twist of 1:11 or 1:10.
If not USGI then "good quality" North American parts (the only nork on it will be the receiver).
LRB bolt
Black feather chassis
M-14.ca scope mount.

But what about optics?
6-24x50 FFP mil/mil...... That's a bare minimum....

Vortex? nightforce? Sightron?

Vortex= will it stand up the the recoil? Anyone have any experience? They have good warranty, but will it be necessary? To be honest, I've killed 3 tascos on M-14s, all were covered by warranty.....
Nightforce=good scopes, fancy schmancy, but very few models are FFP......
Sightron= will it stand up to the recoil? The scopes are a very good value, but how delicate are they?

Full disclosure......

I'm talking about myself...... I'm the best friend I've ever had!

And I've already ordered all the parts listed above.....

Just want to nail down the scope. I only have about 2 grand left to play with, and that's gotta buy the reamer too!

And I need to order that pull-through reamer from Brownelles!

Oh, and I'm doing this all myself! I've built up, accurized and tweaked a couple of Norks. I'm pretty confident that I can install a barrel, everything else is fiddly bits! If all else fails there's always Tony Bens videos!

Cheers!

How much do you want to spend? I bought my dream LRB build with a nightforce ATACR, and I could have bought a very nice used car for what I spent. Good thing I already like my ride.

As for scope, I would suggest a sightron. I like my ATACR, but the 2.5x price cost for the 2.5% increase in optical quality isn't quite worth it. If I were to choose my optics again, I would go a sightron 6-24. I have a sightron 10-50x, and it is a fantastic scope. Optics are very sharp and clear. The ATACR is better, but not buy a huge amount. I will say the build quality of a NF is amazing. You could use the dam thing as club. I wouldn't worry about recoil. M14's are heavy rifles, which will reduce recoil.

I went with a SS 1:11 Kreiger barrel on mine. I chose 1:11 because I wanted the ability to shoot 150gr to 175gr bullets. I'll be shooting mostly 175gr. Definitley get a match trigger job. And if your going to get a kreiger, you might as well get the standard NM upgrades, like a unitized gas cylinder with your rifle.

I went with a Mcmillan M2A stock. That route is very expensive now as you need a 3ed party to bring in the stock, or an export license from the US dept of state. You know, to prevent the terrorists getting their hands on a Mcmillan stock. Not to mention the ####ty dollar right now. I like the blackfeather stock. Really nice, and you don't have to worry about bedding.

Again, think hard about this. You can spend a lot of money on this, and if you decide to get rid of it, you won't get nearly as much as you paid for it, espesially if built on norc receiver, despite them being hammerforged and cut to USGI spec. If you want to do this, make sure that this rifle will be a keeper.

Something like this...

Sounds like a great build! There's no feeling building your own! I recommend the 1:11 barrel. If you can, get an Obermeyer profile reamer. They have a solid reputation.

As far as scopes, I'm having great luck with my Leupold MK4 ER/T 4.5-14x50. I've had great results out to 600yds so far. Please post pics. We love to see guys turning barrels on to receivers.

Tony.

^ good points.

This build has been in the back of my mind off and on since mid '09..... I've pretty much chewed the hide right off it!

I have 5 M-14 pattern rifles already..... Wait, 4, technically one is sold to a fella I shoot with, he just hasn't picked it up yet!

I believe I've done pretty much as much as I can accurizing with nork parts. I already own or have access to all the tools I need to do a full on build other than than the pull through reamer and a headspace gauge set. I have go-no go and field gauges, but I think it's time to step up to a 9 piece set.

The barrel is a 1:11 twist Krieger. From hirsch precision I plan on shooting exclusively 168 SMK, and at various ranges out to 600-800y. It had been my experience with 168 SMKs that they fall apart out past 600 and once you loose the dope they are hard to track....

The parts kit and bolt are all coming from LRB through an importer that works with LRB. I saw their add in Canadian Access to Firearms. I called them and was told if it's on LRBs web page, they can get it here, 6-8 weeks. I ordered more than I need, we will see how well this works out..... Complete rifle parts kit sans receiver and barrel, LRB complete bolt, and a schwack of extra parts (firing pin, extractor, ejector, NM aperature, bolt...... Etc)

I decided on a black feather stock to see if the hype is justified. I've installed 3 of the black feathers for other people, but have yet to hear a range report etc. I was also thinking that this could get really interesting, I could take the built rifle, put it in a USGI fibreglass stock, see how it shoots. Put it in a Boyds walnut, see how it shoots. And see if the "barrel tensioning op-rod guide" is really the answer...... I may even go so far as to bed the rifle into the Boyds stock..... But now we're talking quite a ways down the road!

I would like to keep the cost of the scope around $1500, I've already spent 4K, I'd like to do the whole thing for $6,000 including "spare parts" and tooling.....

If all else fails I can always use a scope I already have for break-in and initial testing.......

Really for shooting out to 600-800 any off the shelf scope should do the job as long as the turrets are adjustable and accurate.

Cheers!

Thanks Tony,

Your videos are responsible for me pulling the trigger on this build..... :d

I was looking at this from Brownelles..... I'm pretty ignorant of which reamer to get....

http://w ww.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/barrel-tools/reamers/centerfire-reamers/308-p-t-reamer-complete-set-sku184300308-5172-11836.aspx

I'm an electrician by trade, so other than high school shop class many moons ago, I have very little vocabulary when it come to machine tools.....

Thanks again for posting videos and answering questions on all things M-14/1A!

Cheers!

I have been using the Clymer .308 reamer sets and guages for years with excellent results on a few dozen builds using short chamber krieger barrels. I think I've installed over 40 of them in the past 5 or 6 years.

What is the name of the importer?

FMI group. A Google search turns up very little. But if you call LRB they put you in touch with FMI.....

No website, I got their info from an add in Access.

The fella I talked to had an American accent, and stated he was a relative of the owner at LRB.

They have completed rifles in stock in Canada and do monthly orders.

Downside, no CC orders and they require payment up front on the quote before they will start the process...

I guess we will see how this goes!

I don't suppose you have an extra one sitting around you could part with?

I only ask as I haven't ordered from brownelles, yet.... And I don't see myself using the reamer more than once or twice!

I don't, I've actually passed on my full tool set to a young machinist who I'm spending a couple years training and filling his head full of everything I know about these rifles.
When I needed a reamer some months ago, I borrowed a set I had previously sold to Buckaroo (thanx Wade ;) )

I would love to get an LRB or JRA barreled action because I have 4 m-14 stocks without actions in them laying around but no one seems to import them like this.

LRB sells various stages of the builds, or they have in the past anyways. Ie: barrelled actions... Think they come with bolts
Just buy and use your favorite importer.
Easy as can be.

I will have to look into that after I save up some funds then. I am starting to get a little frustrated with my shorty m305 in the accuracy department. It seems to group worse at 25m than most of the 100m groups I see posted on here. I can't even mange to sight it in at 100.

Do you really think this gun...or any M14, for that matter...can utilize a scope that powerful? I've had a few M14's (Norcs), never really fell in love with 'em (although I'm starting to feel that way about my current Dominion Socom version), but I've never produced the kind of accuracy that calls for a 6-24x scope. More to the point, I've never seen anyone else produce that level of accuracy, even here on CGN where everyone is a world-class sniper . Is this intended to be a 1000yard target gun?

Honestly, the weight and bulk of a scope like that is a PITA. Why tolerate it when your results probably won't be any better than those you'd get with a smaller, lighter scope? Not to mention the fact that a scope-smasher like the M14 will "have its way" with a heavy scope much more destructively than with a lighter one. The scope on H2O MAN's gun seems much more appropriate and well-balanced.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but asking a legitimate question.
