I haven't done any bedding yet, not sure if I will. I know McMillan says it's not needed. I'll give it a few range sessions before I decide what to do. As for the bottom bolt release, no issues at all.

It loves 168/175 SMK behind Varget
Tried some blasting 150gr and I couldn't hit a 15" target at 110 yards
Good times haha not sure if it was because it was FMJ or if it just doesn't like 150gr
It shot really well with 125gr Sierra Spitzers tho

A couple things to update.
1. Handloads ~ I just loaded and shot some 168 gr A-Max bullets over 41 gr of Varget with stellar results. The 3 round group size was .250". I'll try to post a picture with calipers to show the result.
2. Boyds gunstocks just sent notification that my new stock is on its way. Ordered a prairie varminter with an adjustable cheek rest in a nice brown/ white laminate. Pix to follow.

All the talk in this thread about how they hate the 150/155gr ammo just goes to show you how you really need to check all ammo for each individual rifle. Mine shot 175/178gr match ammo over MOA but will stack the factory 155gr amax load on top of each other (shot over many 5 shot groups with two shooters) Almost didn't buy the 155gr ammo based strictly on this thread.
I also had poor accuracy with some 150 grand fmj surplus. But I got the stuff for free and only got a couple boxes left. Then I'll be trying some Hornady 168 Amax and Federal tactical 165 grain.
I found that mine is sensitive to cleaning, but when all is top notch, i can shoot .342 MOA (mickey mouses) at 100 with 155 gr barnes match burners Under 46 gr of varget. All is stock minus the PTG bolt. It also performes nicely with 155 SMK HPBT.
Getting B&C stock for it in the next few days, the accustock is garbage..and the trigger is not too great either if you ask me.
It really hates 168 SMK's which blows my mind really, i was expecting perfection and all i get is 1 moa at best with 44 gr varget and worse with lower charges.
I will be trying the smks with different seating depths in attempt to improve the results, i may have botched the seating but not sure.
I also want to try the HPBT Scenar from lapua as wel in 167 just for kicks.

Try 4064 if you can, around 42 gr, with the 168 SMK - maybe it will surprise you like it did me!
My savage does not like Varget either with the 168 - switched to 4064 and the groups are cloverleafs.
That was the first rifle I have owned that didn't like VArget.
I do have a few pounds of 4064 that I bought a while ago, had not gotten around to use it yet...Very very cool, thank you, I will try this!
Interesting... When i was developing i wasnt getting good results with 168's until i got up to 44 gr of 4064 (which is what i load now currently using Federal brass, 20" barrel). Its a pain to meter the powder, but if you use a decent scale then it's all good.

You guys using lapua brass? Winchester primers?
Finally got around to working up a load this past weekend. Very impressed with this little rifle. Now I just need a better piece of glass on it!
- Brass: Federal once-fired, trimmed. Primer: WLR. Projectile: Hdy 178gr BTHP. Powder: 8208XBR.
- Charges: three of each: 39.8, 40.0, 40.2, 40.4, 40.6, 40.8, 41.0, 41.2, 41.4, 41.6, 41.8, 42.0gr (targets 1-12 respectively)
- Shot one round per target, then back to shoot the second round per target, then the third (to keep as many factors fair as possible).
- Harris Bipod and rear bag - 100yds.
I'm now working up another test around Load 3 and Load 7 (so 40.1, 40.2, 40.3 and 40.9, 41.0, and 41.1), just to see what was fluke, and what actually grouped.

I thought it was just me
Made 20 of them and not many hit the paper where I could even get an accurate zero
Made some 147gr Campro they look and feel better then the PRVI FMJ
Interesting to see how many variations there are for the same rifle
I'm using Lapua brass, Winchester and Federal Gold primers.
i tried the 42 gr and 42.5 4064 load with the 168 smk's..better grouping, good potential. But i'm getting lots of vertical stringing, Under .5 horizontal but over an inch vertical...could be me, could be the primers...i'm going to try some wolf primers and BR's from CCI...this last batch of winchesters were tarnished , a black coat on some of them...i dont trust them too much. The new stock is on the way too, HS3 from MDT.
