My range time has been limited this year. None the less I slog on.

I am working on a load for my .284 F Class rig. (found here http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1214206-My-first-F-open-build ) Things are going well and I found some nice tight grouping at a pretty hot load. 180gr Bergers 55.40gr of 4831sc. While tweeking to the tenth of a grain I'm finding my primer pockets are pretty much gone and I'm starting to get some bolt face erosion. Primer pockets are now 2 thou over.

Here is the problem. Today at the range ---- shooting for score and not for group size ---- she shot lights out. Brutal bolt lift and some brass transfer onto my bolt face. I've never had grouping like this at 500m. 50s, 49s, 48s, all with 4+ V Bulls......it was pretty breezy today too.

So the big question is keep tweeking this node with meplat adjustments and neck tension and deal with the pressure issues (read order some new bolt heads and buy new brass every fourth reload) or start from square one and find something less hot.

Don't ask me what my fps are. My secret. Lets just say these are wind defying projectiles. Jerry may have been right about touching the limits of 3000fps. ;)

"Brutal bolt lift… brass transfer onto the bolt face… primer pockets gone… bolt face erosion.."

You've answered your own question, I'd say.

Classic indications of severe high pressure. But hey, it's your rifle, your hands and your eyes. What's the worst that could happen?

Yah. The more I think about it I'm sure I will find an accurate load that's a little less hot. Thanks for the injection of reason and clarity.

What you need as do I, are some 2 thou over primers.................LOL "Damn the torpedoes full speed ahead"

In all seriousness, you need to back off a grain or two.

I also wasn't aware one could adjust the meplat of a bullet............did I miss something in my firearms learning?

I have occasionally run into rifles that shot best with loads that were simply too hot to run with.

There will be another node somewhere that will also shoot well [at acceptable pressures] but you may have to change propellants to find it.

It is frustrating, but the challenge, once met successfully, is a reward in itself.

Enjoy, you have some real potential there. Cheers, Dave.

That pic is from what happens when you try and bite through detonation cord. It was a wireliner in AB. We have a saying in the oilfield. Wireliners are dumb

You could try and step down to some slower powder to try and keep your speed up with lower pressures. Maybe try: reloader 22, 7828, or reloader 25. They may be slow enough to keep your pressures safe.

With your 30 plus inch barrel, you could even try some H1000 and see how it works.
