WMU 58. There will be four of us. We have 3 does tags with one more yet to report in with his result from the draw. We only had one doe tag last year. Regardless, we only take one doe and then focus on the 1.5-2.5 year old bucks. The cameras have been out for months now. There are several of the young bucks around. The does and fawns, 3 sets of twins this year and 3 does without fawns, outnumber the bucks by about 3-1.
I've been chasing the local dominate buck, and likely papa of those twins, for a few years now. He is one big buck and as wiley as they come. The only look I've ever had of him was 2 years ago about 2 weeks before the season opened. I was on a scout and I spooked him out of his bed. I know where his main bedding areas are. Funnily enough, this year his preference is a spot only about 100 meters from my shooting range. He likes to bed in a tall grass, open area, creek close by and surrounded by bush that gives him a 360 degree escape route. His beds look like they have been made by a calf moose. I have 3 cameras set up thereabouts. Three years ago I got pictures of him posing in front of a camera in mid day, but since then the only pictures I have of him are are either at 02:00 hrs or he is sprinting past the camera. This year they have only taken one pick of him (02:00 hrs of course). He is big bodied and has big rack. Its still in velvet and it looks like the left side of it damaged, broken off at the second tine off the main beam.
A good season is ahead.
